Africa's struggle for its art

"Africa's struggle for its art" is the topic of an online lecture at the adult education centre on Tuesday, 18 May from 7.30 to 9 pm. The art historian Bénédicte Savoy will shed light on the struggle of African states for their art, which began 50 years ago and ended up in European museums en masse during the colonial era. Savoy is thus making a contribution to the widely discussed topic of looted art and art theft and the return of stolen cultural artefacts to Western collections.
Participation is free of charge. Interested parties can register at www.vhs-chemnitz.de by midnight on 17 May and will then receive an access link by email. This lecture will be held in French and simultaneously translated into German. You can decide for yourself whether you would like to follow the lecture in French or German.
Prof Bénédicte Savoy is Professor of Art History at the TU Berlin and the Collège de France in Paris. In 2016, she received the Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation. Due to her numerous research projects, she is one of the most prominent voices in the debate on restitution. She co-authored the highly acclaimed report for Emmanuel Macron on the restitution of African cultural property to the countries of origin. Her new book "Afrikas Kampf um seine Kunst" will be published by C.H. Beck in spring 2021.
