The 250-kilogram aerial bomb found yesterday in Altchemnitz during construction work was successfully defused on site at around 3.24 pm. The exclusion zone has now been lifted and residents can return to their flats and houses.
The evacuation affected 3,300 residents in parts of Altchemnitz, Erfenschlag, Reichenhain and Harthau. While most people had left the exclusion zone on their own, emergency services from the police and the city's public order service evacuated a further 400 people. The drone unit of the Chemnitz fire brigade supported the emergency services with thermal imaging from the air.
Mayor Knut Kunze, Chairman of the Administrative Staff: "I would like to thank all the emergency services from the police, public order office and fire brigade for their professional work and those affected for their swift and smooth assistance. I would particularly like to thank the Chemnitz City Mission, which took care of the residents in need of care during the evacuation."
A total of 542 people were deployed, including 73 members of the Chemnitz fire brigade, 36 employees of the public order office, 23 members of the administrative staff of the city of Chemnitz and 410 police officers.
