Aircraft for young and old: interesting facts about "drones"

Multicopters are very popular. The so-called "drones" fascinate both children and adults. You and your children will get to know these whirring flying objects in our course. Various flying devices and their intended use will be presented. You will learn from an experienced professional pilot how multicopters work and how they are controlled. The course is rounded off with helpful tips for maximum flying pleasure with minimum risk of crashing.

In 1911, Chemnitz city garden director Otto Werner wrote: "Our city can boast that it was one of the first to recognise the importance of public gardens and parks. Many other important cities followed this example many years later."
The guided tour covers a wide range of areas, demonstrating this foresight in the cityscape. It begins at Schillerplatz, once the largest square in Saxony, leads to the oldest parks in Chemnitz and looks at the different approaches to the parks.
One focus of the tour will be the historical development and current design of Schillerplatz as an intervention area of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.

Uncomfortable monuments? The Chemnitz Grove of Honour of the Socialists

Uncomfortable monuments include many buildings that cause a certain unease today due to the political and social circumstances at the time of their construction or use. In Chemnitz, this includes the Socialist Grove of Honour at the municipal cemetery. It was inaugurated in 1982 and from then until the political change, this area was used as a place of remembrance for the anti-fascist resistance fighters from the Karl-Marx-Stadt/Chemnitz region and for people who used their strength and skills for the reconstruction in 1945. The memorial was designed by a collective of artists under the direction of Prof Clauss Dietel. The Grove of Honour will be preserved as part of the cultural heritage of the GDR. During this guided tour, you will learn more about the idea behind the memorial and its history.

If you have always wanted to write a short story, this practice-orientated workshop is the right place for you. After a short introduction, you'll be able to start writing as soon as possible. With lots of fun inventing and developing, you will approach the topic in individual steps so that everyone can go home with a short story at the end. The short story course offers an ideal playground for trying out genres or taking a closer look at individual stylistic devices. The focus is on developing characters and your own story, finding themes and building suspense.

Der unbequeme Stefan Heym. A historical-political tour

Stefan Heym was born Helmut Flieg in Chemnitz on 10 April 1913. He spent his childhood with his family on the Kaßberg. Because of his anti-militaristic poem "Exportgeschäfte" (Export Business), he had to leave the grammar school in his home town. He completed his Abitur in Berlin, where he began studying journalism. After the Reichstag fire in 1933, he fled to Prague. There he gave up his civil name and henceforth called himself Stefan Heym. The tour traces his daily life in Chemnitz. Reading passages from his autobiography "Nachruf" (Obituary) complement this historical and political walk.

There are various responsible honorary positions in the judiciary that can be taken on by citizens - not only in finding and shaping the law. The event provides an overview and important information on various honorary positions in the judiciary. These include honorary judges at the labour, finance, administrative, social or regional court (chamber for commercial matters), as well as lay assessors and youth assessors at the local or regional court and honorary activities in the probation service or in the prison system. We invite you to familiarise yourself with these honorary positions and ask any questions you may have.
The event is a co-operation between the Association of Honorary Judges of Central Germany (VERM) and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

According to the respective seasonal theme, four individual events invite you to calm down, find your inner centre and activate your own sources of strength with both calm and lively circle dances, physical exercises and short free dance sequences. The energies of the respective season and the cyclical circle of life can be sensed and experienced with impulses on the theme of the season. The major themes of life such as becoming new, growing, unfolding and letting go are echoed again and again in a variety of ways.

The hackers are coming! Live hacking event in Chemnitz

Fraud when shopping online, accessing online accounts or viruses and Trojans in the inbox: according to Digitalbarometer 2023, a citizen survey by the Federal Ministry for Information Security (BSI), more than a quarter of respondents have already been victims of online crime. At our event, experts will show you just how easy it can be to access other people's data. In addition to live demonstrations of hacker attack scenarios, they will explain the security gaps when using your own online devices. They will also show you how you can use simple tricks to protect your own data from unauthorised access.
This event is being held in cooperation with the Saxon State Chancellery, the Saxon adult education centres, the Saxony Consumer Advice Centre, the Federal Office for Information Security and the Saxon Data Protection and Transparency Commissioner.

Skills for the new world of work: opportunities and challenges in the "era of artificial intelligence"

Artificial intelligence (AI) will change and shape our working lives in the future. In this workshop, you will develop and reflect on the impact of AI on your own working environment. You will identify the skills required to successfully meet the demands and challenges of a working world characterised by AI. The aim is to provide you with the understanding and tools to actively shape your professional future in the "era of artificial intelligence". You will cover the following topics, among others:

  • the fundamentals of AI and its impact on different industries and professional fields,
  • the specific skills required in an AI-infused workplace, such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills and creative thinking,

Guided tour of the Kaßberg Prison learning and memorial site
Location: Kaßberg Prison Learning and Memorial Centre, Kaßbergstraße 16

Note: Admission must be paid on site.

The Kaßberg prison in Chemnitz is an important place of remembrance of GDR injustice and German division as a former processing centre for the release of prisoners. Most of the more than 33,000 political prisoners who were bought out of prison in the GDR by the federal government between 1962/1963 and 1989 were released from here. The building complex also served as a remand centre for the State Security and previously for the Soviet secret police NKVD/MGB. During the National Socialist era, members of various persecuted groups were imprisoned in the Kaßberg prison. The learning and memorial site not only depicts the history of the prison building and the release of prisoners, but also gives a face to the countless politically persecuted people with a special look at some of their biographical fates. The guided tour provides an insight into the permanent exhibition, the history of the site and the learning centre for democracy.

In this lecture, you will learn how inclusion can succeed in an organisation. Collaboration between members with different needs often presents clubs and their stakeholders with major challenges. At the same time, an inclusive understanding offers many opportunities, especially for personal growth.
This event is a cooperation between the Bürgerstiftung für Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Learning to fly a multicopter - for pilots of all ages
Location: Chemnitz/Jahnsdorf airfield, Wilhermsdorfer Straße 43

The course is suitable for passionate hobby pilots as well as beginners. Learn how to fly your multicopter safely from an experienced pilot and instructor at the Jahnsdorf airfield. You will receive instruction on multicopter flying based on the EU drone regulation that has been in force since 1 January 2024. A special experience is the sightseeing flight over the airfield with your own device.
Please bring your aircraft with a charged battery and proof of the liability insurance required to operate the aircraft.
Young people and children under the age of 16 can take part in the course with a parent. The fee for children and young people can only be partially reduced in accordance with the vhs Chemnitz terms and conditions due to the aerodrome rental fee.
In the event of unsuitable flying weather, the course will be rescheduled to an alternative date.

Organ donation - yes or no? What do I need to know to make a decision?

There is a lot of ignorance, uncertainty and misinformation within the population on the subject of organ donation. But everyone is called upon to make a very personal decision: organ donation - yes or no? This event provides information on the requirements and procedures surrounding organ donation. Among other things, the following topics will be discussed:

  • Legal basis of organ donation
  • Brain death - what exactly does it mean and how is brain death determined?
  • Who decides whether to approve or reject an organ donation?
  • Who does what on the way to organ donation?
  • Are age and previous illnesses even important for organ donation?

After the lecture, there will be time to answer your questions about organ donation. The speaker, Dr Gunnar Richter, is Head of the Transplantation Officer Unit and works in the Department of Neurology at Chemnitz Hospital.

This event is a co-operation between Chemnitz Hospital and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
