We seem to be living in times of permanent crisis. Financial and euro crises, migration and refugee crises, the coronavirus pandemic and, most recently, the war in Ukraine: society seems to be in a permanent state of emergency. This is changing the society in which we live and the politics with which we govern ourselves: polarisation tendencies in society are growing into divisions, the party system is experiencing new formations and political actors are trying out new formats of exchange with society. Change and adaptation are part of everyday life in liberal-democratic societies. However, questions remain: How much crisis pressure can the political system withstand? How long will it last? Which parties and political players are benefiting from the coronavirus pandemic and which are not?
This measure is co-financed by tax revenue on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon state parliament.

What disturbs healthy sleep and what can be done about it? There are many causes of sleep disorders. This lecture will give you tips on falling asleep and staying asleep. You will learn about breathing techniques and how you can help yourself with herbs and Schüssler salts. You will also be shown naturopathic therapies so that you don't have to resort to sleeping pills. problem areas can conjure up a beautiful blaze of colour for bees and bumblebees. There will also be tips on growing fruit in a shade garden and using bulbous plants.

Smartphones are probably the most practical technical devices ever available to mankind. However, they are also shameless chatterboxes and data slingers that send details of our lives through the internet in the form of data. Who we know, where we are and when, and what makes us tick. Exactly two companies can dictate the rules: Google and Apple with their Android and iOS operating systems and in-built app marketplaces. The lecture will look at this strange smartphone world with its opportunities and pitfalls: What do operating systems and apps learn about our lives? Why are so few companies so powerful? And what can be done to make your own smartphone less of an "enemy" and even more of a "friend"?

The video game behaviour of their children is a "thorn in the side" of many parents: Too much, too long or too brutal gaming in the children's room, alone or with friends. This often leads to a lack of dialogue between parents and children about the games, and bans are imposed that can really shake up the atmosphere at home. In this event, you will learn about the risks and dangers of gaming, but also about the opportunities for experiencing media in the family. You will receive practical tips on setting rules for media use. We will also show you popular games and platforms so that you can experience the world your children live in.

The November pogroms of 1938 in Chemnitz and south-west Saxony

Every year on 9 November, the November pogroms of 1938 are commemorated in Germany. In Chemnitz and south-west Saxony, too, there were attacks and violence against people persecuted as Jews, their homes and businesses as well as the Jewish communities. This included the then Chemnitz department stores' Tietz and its managing director Hermann Fürstenheim, who was murdered in his house on Kaßberg on the night of 10 November 1938. In a research project entitled "BruchStücke. The November Pogroms in Saxony 1938", a great deal of evidence, sources and eyewitness accounts were compiled. The fates of individual people take centre stage. On this evening, historian Daniel Ristau will report on the results of the research project specifically for the Chemnitz area and will also use visual material to show what happened here at the time.
The event will take place as part of the exhibition of the same name, which can be seen on the 4th floor of the Chemnitz TIETZ from 4 to 25 November 2022.
The event is a cooperation between the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Flood? Heavy rain? Wildly flowing water? Usually inconspicuous streams quickly become a danger during storms. Even small streams are affected. But what can be done against such extreme events? The lecture explains the current situation along streams with a look into the past. Man has always tried to change and direct streams according to his needs. Today, we are looking for ways to minimise hazards. Not only the development of recent years will be discussed, but also the question of what effect even small interventions can have. Digital media and services are very appealing to children and young people. This event will enable parents and educators to sensitise children and young people to digital media. Speakers from the Chemnitz Police Headquarters will shed light on the youth cultural background for the great interest in digital media. This event will focus in particular on the topics of cybergrooming and sexting. They will also provide an overview of children's media use and explain the potential dangers. Among other things, they will answer the question of which regulatory and criminal law framework conditions prevail online.

What to do about tinnitus and noise sensitivity?

In the big city, we are exposed to an enormous amount of noise sources, from road traffic and open-plan offices to department stores' or building site noise. More and more people are suffering from constant noise pollution and stress levels are rising. For more than 50 per cent of people suffering from tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears), stress is the main cause. It is important to develop a different way of dealing with noise and stress, as often enough sources of stress or noise cannot be switched off and concentration and performance often suffer as a result. In addition to imparting knowledge about the background to tinnitus and noise sensitivity, the course provides suggestions and exercises for general stress reduction (with music and sounds), listening habits, silence and noise perception. We develop new internal and external protection options, learn to create a greater distance to noise and can thus improve our own well-being.

Sunflower oil, pasta or rice - the supermarket shelves are poorly stocked in some places. In order to buy certain products, you need luck and more and more money. What seemed unthinkable just two years ago is now the norm. At this event, interested parties will therefore receive valuable tips on shelf life, hygiene, storage and avoiding food waste. How long can I keep flour and oil? Does it make sense to keep rice and pasta in stock? And what about mustard and milk? These and other questions will be answered in the course, and helpful shopping tips will also be provided. Feel free to bring your own questions! The event is part of the vhs series on commodity and supply security "Will everything be scarce?". It takes place in cooperation with the Consumer Advice Centre Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Actively and democratically helping to shape the administration of justice - this is possible in Germany: for example, as an honorary judge for criminal cases, i.e. as a lay judge at the local and regional courts. We are looking for interested citizens who would like to take on this important task for the new term of office for lay judges from 2024 to 2028. The information event will provide practical information about the requirements, conditions and basic principles. Anyone interested should definitely make a note of this date!

Man, who believes himself to be the "crown of creation" and has "subdued the earth" with his scientific and technological power of intervention, has created a model of civilisation that is not sustainable. Although this narrative was successful for a long time, it can obviously no longer be true. Therefore, we need to change the DNA of our culture, away from domination of nature and conquest, towards a different way of living that destroys less. We need to realise that we are part of nature and that we work together with other natural systems. The earth is stronger than we are. We need to rethink people and society.
Speaker Philipp Blom is a historian and author. His books have been translated into 16 languages. For his book "Der taumelnde Kontinent. Europe 1900 - 1914", he received the NDR Kultur non-fiction prize.

Totally networked - totally controlled? How algorithms intervene in our lives

When collected data and information about internet users is analysed according to specific criteria and used for certain purposes, algorithms are involved. Of interest here is: What is clicked, what is read, what attracts attention? We keep hearing that algorithms are becoming increasingly relevant, but what exactly are algorithms and how do they work? In his lecture, media scientist Prof Dr Christian Pentzold sheds light on both the benefits and the dangers of algorithms. He will also explain how algorithms can be used sensibly, but also how they can be scrutinised. The question of whether and how "de-netting" is possible, i.e. how we should deal with algorithmic media or how we can avoid them, will then be discussed.
