Who doesn't get their heart pumping when the venerable mining parade parades through the dark evening streets of a snow-covered town in the Ore Mountains? To the sound of familiar marches, the miners and smelters parade in their traditional habits.

The lecture opens a unique chapter in the history of mining and metallurgy in Saxony: In vivid images, it tells of the development of a practical working uniform, which changed from a distinctive traditional costume to a regimented "mountain parade habit" to a prescribed service and parade uniform. The event traces their development in the field of tension between the splendour and misery of a profession.

"By chance, I was able to look through a pile of documents in the Frankenberg town archive during filming. At the top was an order for goods for the Sachsenburg warehouse. The pile also contained letters of application, arrest and interrogation records. In every single document, you could see the entanglements of the camp with its surroundings and the involvement of countless people." (Ute Adamczewski)

The documentary film "Zustand und Gelände" by director Ute Adamczewski, which has won several awards at festivals, uses long film sequences to show the current state of places of early National Socialist terror. The images are accompanied by impressive quotes from documents that the director found in local archives. The film thus offers a variety of opportunities to engage with the topic of National Socialism, in particular the history of the early concentration camps in Saxony and the various cultures of remembrance after 1945.

The film screening (120 minutes) is part of the "Open Trial" exhibition programme of the ASA-FF association in Chemnitz. Following the film screening, Hannah Zimmermann and Anna Schüller will comment on the lack of remembrance that still exists today - on the subject of the NSU and Sachsenburg respectively. Afterwards, director Ute Adamczewski will answer questions from the audience.

The event is a co-operation between the Geschichtswerkstatt Sachsenburg and the ASA-FF e. V./Offener Prozess and the Volkshochschule Chemnitz.

"Born to see, ordered to look..." - the German-Jewish actor and amateur photographer Julius Arnfeld

After 82 years of life, Julius Arnfeld (1875 - 1957) left his mark as an actor, director, amateur photographer and author of photo excursions. His work catered to the interests and needs of many people for art and entertainment in imperial Germany and beyond. However, the bourgeois-conservative cultural man Arnfeld was not thanked for his endeavours to synthesise being Jewish and German at the same time during the rise of National Socialism. The National Socialists destined him, the patriotic war volunteer, and almost his entire family for deportation to the Theresienstadt ghetto. Julius Arnfeld was the only one to survive and saved himself and his fellow sufferers from self-abandonment.

In this lecture, Peter Blechschmidt from Chemnitz, a great-grandson of Julius Arnfeld, will reveal previously unpublished biographical details of his great-grandfather - particularly with regard to Julius Arnfeld's voluntary renunciation of his successful stage career in favour of a reorientation towards animal photography from 1931.

Adolph Menzel's Art and Realities - Live from the Pinakothek

Adolph Menzel is regarded as the outstanding representative of German realism in the 19th century. Tirelessly drawing, he observed the human and the all-too-human as a chronicler of a "vie moderne en Allemagne".

But why didn't the artist actually take photographs? Menzel was very familiar with the reproducing and depicting media of the time, which ensured his economic success and at the same time characterised his view of things in life. Nevertheless, he personally clung to painting and graphic art. Was he perhaps searching for symbolic means of expression that went beyond the mere depiction of reality? The lecture will explore these questions live from the Neue Pinakothek with surprising and exciting insights into the paintings of the Neue Pinakothek.

The history of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre goes back to long before its actual founding date in 1919. It is closely linked to the commitment of Chemnitz Jews to their city, as they saw themselves as part of civic society from the very beginning and contributed to the city's economic and cultural upturn. This was evident not only in industry and commerce as well as art and culture, but also in the hitherto little-studied areas of education and further education. As a result of the destruction of Jewish life during the Nazi era, these traces have been largely buried.

This event will now present the results of a research project being carried out by the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany" anniversary year. The Jewish patrons and lecturers will not only be mentioned by name, but their services to the adult education movement in Chemnitz will also be presented and honoured.

Part 3: Creative storytelling - working with the Kamishibai

Storytelling not only inspires children's imagination, but also gives them the opportunity to find a very special place of peace. The variations for presenting a story in an interesting way are almost inexhaustible: narrative theatre (Kamishibai), sound stories or role-playing games.

Stories for moving, thinking, learning or playing are presented and recited. Craft instructions, suggestions for games and other ideas are tried out together and realised in small groups. This workshop demonstrates the creative use of stories and books in a practical way. All the suggestions presented can be immediately and easily integrated into the classroom or day-care centre routine.

Tabloid journalism is a form of journalism that appeals to readers on an emotional level. Images and texts speak a clear and concise language. Attention is fought for in large letters and sometimes drastic words. The accusation that the tabloid press is superficial, abbreviated and gimmicky is nothing new.

In this event, Mario Adolphsen, head of copywriting at Morgenpost Sachsen, will explain the principles of news selection in tabloid journalism, the art of reducing complex information to short sentences and clear texts and the role played by images and headlines.

We live in turbulent times: The corona pandemic in particular has brought and continues to bring forth new half-truths, rumours, falsified and distorted information, conspiracy narratives and misinformation on an almost daily basis. They take hold, are passed on and spread at breakneck speed - giving the impression that they reflect reality.

How are we supposed to know what is really true and trustworthy? How can facts be understood or made comprehensible? How do you get to the real source of information?

The author and blogger Ingrid Brodnig, known for her numerous publications on the subject of online hate, has long been active in the defence of the internet as a medium of enlightenment. On this evening, she will also show that there are ways for all users of the internet and social media to counter disinformation and false reports and make real facts understandable. This is also the case in her new book "Einspruch! Countering conspiracy myths and fake news - in the family, among friends and online".

Austrian journalist Ingrid Brodnig was editor of the news magazine "Profil" from 2015 to 2017, where she was responsible for reporting on digital topics. Prior to this, she was head of the media department at the Viennese weekly newspaper "Falter" and author of the weekly IT column "Digitalia". Ms Brodnig has received numerous awards and prizes for her journalistic work and was named Austria's Digital Champion in the EU in 2017.

In professional contact with people, protégés, colleagues or superiors, dialogue is an important element in expressing one's own concerns and understanding the intentions of others. Appreciative communication is a secure basis for getting things moving together, resolving conflicts and ultimately always strengthening relationships.

In non-violent communication (NVC) according to Marshall B. Rosenberg, the method is less important than the attitude with which conversations and meetings are conducted. The course provides an introduction to the NVC method with a special focus on the professional context.

Practical exercise situations offer an initial application - always with reference to everyday working life and personal experience. The skills for peaceful connection can not only be developed during the course, but also grow and strengthen through regular practice in everyday (professional) life.

Recognising and acting against discrimination - A course on discrimination against people with disabilities

People with disabilities experience many forms of discrimination in everyday life, for example because they have more difficult access to buildings, have to listen to derogatory comments, are treated worse than others or have their dignity violated because of their disability.

When people without disabilities experience such situations, they do not have to stand by and do nothing, but can take action.

This is exactly what this course will be about:

• What is discrimination? Forms, levels, manifestations
• Who is affected? Diversity dimensions of discrimination
• How does discrimination manifest itself in my living and working environment?
• How can I act myself, what can I do?
• What legal and out-of-court intervention options are there?

The course offers practice-orientated knowledge, concrete instructions for action and implementation strategies. The methods are based on the experiences that the participants bring with them from their everyday (professional) lives. It is designed to be interactive and, in addition to imparting knowledge, there will also be room for mutual exchange.

The course is aimed at citizens who are themselves affected by discrimination or who want to find out more and learn about their own options for action.

The world is facing many challenges: The fight against hunger and poverty, affordable and clean energy, climate protection, sustainable cities and fairer globalisation. In order to find answers to the pressing issues of our time, the United Nations has agreed on a total of 17 global goals for sustainable development in the "Agenda 2030", which are intended to provide an answer to the impending crises.

Such political goals often seem abstract and far removed from our everyday lives. However, the agenda is aimed at all areas of individual and public life. Global challenges, such as the climate crisis, have a very concrete impact on local people. This is where they become visible and tangible. At the same time, local action has a concrete impact on global developments. That is why local solutions must be found for global concerns.

Together with you, we want to look at Chemnitz. At this event, we want to discuss with you and stakeholders from politics and administration, civil society and business: Why are the Sustainable Development Goals relevant to us all and what is happening in our city?

Right-wing land grab - ethnic movements in Saxony

The right-wing lust for land seems unbroken. Ethnic settlers are buying farms and houses across the country, forming nationalist communities, expanding family, social and economic networks across regions and interfering in regional cultural and political affairs. In Central Saxony in particular, a new right-wing settlement hotspot seems to be developing unnoticed by the public. Despite numerous media reports and documentaries, the land grab by nationalist family groups, known as "Sippen", continues unchecked.

Journalist and author Andrea Röpke has been researching the extreme right, the ideas and history of the völkisch movement and the structures and networks of völkisch settlers, including in Saxony, for many years. In her lecture, she will address the following questions: What are völkisch settlers? What ideologies do they follow? What structures and networks are we dealing with? Where are they represented in Saxony?

The Saxony Cultural Office's mobile counselling team will provide answers to these questions: What are the difficulties in dealing with ethnic settlers in Saxony? And what can be done when ethnic settlers settle in the region?

Journalists and their audience: disappointed expectations as a cause of dwindling media trust?

Digital media environments have fundamentally changed the relationship between journalists and their audiences. The positive consequences include easier participation of citizens in the formation of public opinion, while the negative consequences include polarisation and hostility towards the media.

The lecture will first categorise the above-mentioned and related phenomena and developments: To what extent does the public even want to use new forms of participation? Can we speak of a "crisis of confidence" in traditional journalism in view of scientific findings?

Following the lecture, there will be an opportunity to discuss - for example, whether the disappointment of mutual expectations of journalists and their audience could be a possible cause for the failure of journalism-audience relationships and a distancing.
