Thanks to the comprehensive Digital Pact for Schools, schools in Chemnitz have been and are being equipped with iPads. These digital devices are intended to support learning and communication, but also learning at school. In order to use iPads optimally and sensibly, basic knowledge of the devices in terms of their possibilities and limitations is important. In this course for parents and educational professionals, you will learn what iPads can and cannot do and how you can support (your) children and young people in using these tablets. You will also receive answers to these questions: What educational added value do iPads offer for learning? How do you promote media literacy? And what about
data protection and remote maintenance?

The Darknet: the digital underworld and its contradictions

The darknet is a place of strange contradictions: it is a safe space for people who want to escape surveillance and enables opposition activists abroad to circumvent internet censorship. But it is also a refuge for criminal and illegal activities.
Above all, the darknet is an efficient, liberal drug "shopping mall". Illegal narcotics are traded there with the same ease as fashion and books are sold elsewhere. The anonymisation technology is financed by the surveillance-happy US government, while the infrastructure is operated by civil society critical of surveillance, primarily by private individuals and associations from Germany.
In his lecture, journalist and author Stefan Mey will shed light on this special digital world with its risks, absurdities and opportunities.

The lecture will present the structures of the German hospital landscape and key features of healthcare provision. What are the challenges of hospital care in the future? What reforms have there been recently? The remuneration of services and working conditions in hospitals will also be discussed. Thomas Gerlinger is a professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Bielefeld University and head of the working group "Health Systems, Health Policy and Health Sociology".

You will gain an overview of the necessary personal and professional qualifications as well as the legal forms of a company and learn how to analyse the market situation. An introduction to trade law, subsidies, financing a business start-up, bookkeeping, taxes and the basics of cost and performance accounting will make you fit for the start-up.

Between globalism and democracy: The EU, Europe and nation states

In the heyday of neoliberalism, globalisation was seen as inevitable and redistributive democracy as outdated. Growing prosperity for all was the promise - including the EU. However, the result is a growing inability to tame the capitalist inequality machine. Should the restructuring of the state system continue as before, i.e. in the direction of even greater supranational centralisation? Or would the better solution be to move towards a modern "small state system" based on peaceful co-operation?
Wolfgang Streeck, sociologist and director emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, and Peter Gauweiler, lawyer and politician, discuss these questions.

On the trail of the Stumbling Stones. A tour of the Sonnenberg

The crimes of the National Socialist regime also left terrible traces in Chemnitz. In memory of Jewish citizens who once lived in Chemnitz and other victims of Nazi tyranny, 259 Stolpersteine have now been laid in the city centre.
We invite you to take a walk along some of the Stolpersteine on the Sonnenberg, which are located in front of the former homes of Chemnitz victims, and pause there in dignified remembrance.
The tour begins at the house at Dresdner Straße 38 (meeting point) and ends in front of the house at Zietenstraße 85.

Insects - food of the future, delicious or disgusting?

In our culture, eating insects is rather unusual. But why is that? After all, more than 2,000 insect species worldwide are considered edible and provide an important source of nutrients. They also score points for their high protein content and environmentally friendly production as a substitute for meat and meat products.
The workshop explains why insects are attracting more and more attention as a new type of food. Their nutritional values and the assessment of their environmental balance in comparison to other foods will also be discussed. The course provides basic information and tips for shopping.

The city with the monument: Chemnitz and the Karl Marx Head

The Karl Marx Monument has stood in the centre of Chemnitz since October 1971 - in the city that bore the name Karl Marx City for 37 years, from 10 May 1953 to 1 June 1990. The monument is the city's best-known landmark and has long since attracted international attention.
The lecture takes a look at the former symbol of socialism, sheds light on the history of the creation of the world's second largest portrait bust and reconstructs how the handling of this monument has changed over the last 30 years.
You are welcome to bring along your own memories of the Karl Marx head.

Sustainable, safe, enjoyable - what meets modern "taste"?

Our diet is changing, new types of food are conquering the market. Agriculture is undergoing radical change. At the same time, many people are asking critical questions about where food and raw materials come from and under what conditions they are produced. The lecture addresses these questions: What resonates with consumers, what tastes good to them, and how much indulgence is allowed or required? Where is our modern "flavour" heading?
Food chemist Andrea Büttner is Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV and heads the Chair of Flavour and Odour Research at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The event is being organised in cooperation with the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).

The job-related German language support according to §45a AufenthG prepares you for professional and everyday language skills at level B1 or B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Modules B1 and B2 each conclude with the "German test for the workplace" certificate examination.

Various areas of law play a role in voluntary work - whether as a board member or as a volunteer. Civil law for liability issues, labour law to define what is no longer voluntary work and tax law for trainer and volunteer allowances - there is a lot to consider.

According to statistics, the daily use of social media platforms is steadily increasing, especially among young people. This also increases the influence of influencers on their followers, as influencers are omnipresent in social media. It is worth taking a closer look and asking how influencers influence value orientations, opinions and purchasing decisions. It is also worth asking: How do influencers establish relationships with their followers? And what exactly is advertising in this context? And what social role can influencers actually play? The event will address and answer these and other questions and also provide space for questions and discussion.

Storytelling not only fires the imagination of children, but also gives them the opportunity to find a very special place of peace. The variations for presenting a story in an interesting way are almost inexhaustible: narrative theatre (Kamishibai), sound stories or role-playing games.
Stories for moving, thinking, learning or playing are presented and recited. Craft instructions, suggestions for games and other ideas are tried out together and realised in small groups. This workshop demonstrates the creative use of stories and books in a practical way. All the suggestions presented can be immediately and easily integrated into the classroom or day-care centre routine.

Mowing with a scythe - basic course

Enjoy your flowering meadow in summer and then cut the grass with your own scythe. This is not old-fashioned, but forward-looking. This old and tried-and-tested craft technique protects the meadow ecosystem and contributes to ecologically sustainable insect protection.
The course imparts theoretical knowledge and the basics of scythe control. You will also learn how to master difficult mowing situations through practical exercises.
You can bring your own scythe. Please ensure that you transport it safely.

Anyone who listens to Radio Chemnitz only knows one side of reality. But what does it actually look like behind the scenes, i.e. in the broadcasting studio? What does the day-to-day work of editors and presenters look like? How is the news content selected and compiled? And what criteria and principles apply?
In this event, you will gain an insight and understanding of how a radio studio works and how programmes are created. Presenter Conny Hartmann will report live from the Radio Chemnitz studio and will be available for questions and discussion.

At odds with the EU: on the rule of law in Poland and Hungary

By joining the EU in 2004, Hungary and Poland, like all other EU member states, recognised the European system of values and the EU treaties and agreed to abide by them. However, the current governments in both countries, which are becoming increasingly authoritarian, are violating the EU's rule of law principles - for example by reorganising their judicial systems and restricting the freedom of the press. These actions jeopardise the process of integration into the European Union and ultimately the stability of the alliance of states.
On this evening, Europe expert Michael Roth, member of the Bundestag for the SPD and Minister of State for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office, will take a look at the situation in Poland and Hungary, categorise it and point out ways in which this very fundamental conflict could be resolved.

True to the motto "Today I plant, tomorrow I preserve, and the day after tomorrow I eat it all!", we invite you to three workshops on seasonal and regional food.
We invite you to the Chemnitz Environmental Centre: The event will focus on various methods for preserving fruit and vegetables. If the harvest is somewhat larger or surplus produce needs to be used up, tried and tested or newly discovered physical, biological and chemical methods can help. Local experts will introduce you to souring, fermenting or drying. Come along and bring your own experiences with you.

On the trail of the snapshot - the everyday life of a photojournalist

What would a daily newspaper be without pictures? One thing is clear: every newspaper report or news item attracts more attention if a suitable picture emphasises the information and makes it clear. But what does the everyday life of a photojournalist actually look like?
How are the images created, how are they edited and then selected for presentation to the public? What influences the decision, what principles guide the photojournalist?
These and many other questions will be answered at the event by long-time Chemnitz photojournalist Harry Härtel. He will talk about his day-to-day work and will be available for discussion.
