Clemens Kiessling and Julian Nejkow are known as hosts of the podcast "Nach meiner Kenntnis sofort". In this dialogue format, they invite guests from Chemnitz to talk to each other. They will talk about life stories and their ruptures, personal challenges and opportunities, as well as how their guests view the political situation. "We would like to enter into a direct dialogue with citizens in this series," say the hosts. After the talk with the guests, the discussion will be open to all participants.
This event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "Controversial on Site" project.

At odds with the EU: The rule of law in Hungary

By joining the EU in 2004, Hungary, like all other EU member states, recognised the European system of values and the EU treaties and agreed to abide by them.
However, Hungary is now the European Union's authoritarian problem child. Since the right-wing populist government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán came to power in April 2010, there is not much left of democracy in Hungary. Critics and the opposition have been silenced and freedom of the press and the rule of law have been increasingly restricted. After years of helpless criticism and under pressure from the European Parliament, the EU Commission initiated rule of law proceedings against Hungary last year. Budapest was given time to guarantee under the rule of law that EU funds were not being diverted through corruption. As this was not done sufficiently, twelve billion in EU funding for Hungary was frozen until further notice at the end of 2022. Viktor Orbán is now under pressure to at least partially reverse years of dismantling democracy in his country.
Together with experts, we take a look at the developments in Hungary and the fight for Europe's democracy. What are the chances of restoring the rule of law in Hungary? Why has the European Union stood by for so long during Hungary's transformation into an "elected autocracy"? Could 2023 possibly be a decisive and fateful year for the Hungarian prime minister?
We would like to discuss these and other questions with you.

Remembering with dignity: The memorial site for Chemnitz "euthanasia" victims under National Socialism

During the National Socialist era, people in Chemnitz were also victims of "euthanasia" crimes. Although this did not happen in the former Chemnitz State Educational Institution in Altendorf (now the SFZ Support Centre), mentally and physically disabled people were sent to their deaths from there in the Pirna-Sonnenstein "euthanasia" institution. In order to create a worthy memorial for these people, a walk-in memorial was created in September 2007 on the grounds of the former institutional cemetery in Altendorf, which invites visitors to pause and reflect.
This event aims to encourage people to visit the site and learn about the events of that time, the biographies of individual victims and the "euthanasia" crimes in Saxony.
The artist Frank Maibier, who designed and created the memorial site together with Gregor T. Kozik, will also be present at the event.

Sharing instead of having - possibilities and limits of the sharing economy

More is already shared in everyday life than most people realise. But what sharing models are there? And what needs to be considered when borrowing, swapping and sharing? There are various ways to use possessions more sensibly and share them with others instead of buying everything yourself. Whether it's food, car sharing, clothing circles or neighbourhood help - "sharing instead of having" is the motto! The workshop will explore the opportunities and limits of the sharing economy together.

Around one in two Germans suffers from headaches, and over eight million people in Germany are plagued by migraines. It is important to know what types of headaches there are, what causes are known and what treatment methods appear suitable. In the course, you will learn about the influence of your personal lifestyle and how you can achieve relief with the concepts and methods of holistic medicine. The course provides an introductory overview and addresses personal questions.

Publishing photos: What you need to know about copyright and co.

Photos are quickly taken and published on social networks. But there is a risk of trouble if other people are depicted or other people's photos are published. What should you know before publishing? What exceptions restrict the so-called "right to one's own image" and copyright? The event explains these questions and raises awareness of how to handle photos carefully.
The event is aimed at parents and teachers who want to sensitise children to these issues.

Workshop: How does the European Union work?

What is the European Union and who makes policy there, how and for whom? What is the difference between the European Council and the Council of the European Union? How much power does the European Parliament have and what about the democratic deficit that is so often talked about?
In this interactive workshop, we want to take a closer look together at the European Union, which sometimes seems so far away. We will also discuss the status quo of the EU and the further development of the community of states.

Percy Bysshe Shelley was one of the most important poets of English Romanticism. He led an eventful life, cultivated friendships with other famous literary figures such as Lord Byron and was married to the author of "Frankenstein", Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly. His moving poems and his enduring social criticism still characterise literature and society today. Our speaker will present Shelley's work and his life.

Solidarische Landwirtschaft

Solidarity agriculture focusses on sharing: several people share the costs of a farm and in return receive its harvest. Furthermore, in small-scale farming, the fertility of the soil is taken care of, tried and tested vegetable varieties are cultivated and the animals are kept in a species-appropriate manner. Come and talk to the founder of "Hof zur Bunten Kuh" and gain an insight into the working methods and organisation of the project.

Halle is everywhere. Voices of Jewish women - book presentation and discussion

When the attack on the Jewish community in Halle took place on 9 October 2019, a shock spread. Two uninvolved people become victims of an attack outside the synagogue grounds. They are hit by the deadly violence that the perpetrator had actually intended for visitors to the synagogue - on the highest Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
The book "Halle ist überall. Stimmen jüdischer Frauen" (Halle is everywhere. Voices of Jewish women) contains texts by 20 women that document their individual perspectives, reactions and reflections on the terrorist attack. The texts are complemented by photographs that symbolise the women's Jewishness.
This event will present the book and its concerns. It will also discuss how the majority of society can courageously and unequivocally defend itself against attacks based on hatred, anti-Semitism and racism.
Two authors of the book "Halle is everywhere. Voices of Jewish Women" were invited to talk about their experiences and perspectives: Journalist and photographer Sharon Adler, who helped design the book and contributed her own text, and Renate Aris from Chemnitz, who also describes her survival during the Nazi era in her contribution.
This event is part of the Days of Jewish Culture 2023.

Video games are becoming increasingly popular and have long since arrived in almost every child's bedroom. Children and young people feel invincible in their favourite games, can live out their creativity, make new contacts and simply have carefree fun.
The event aims to show the positive aspects of gaming, but also to provide information about the dangers. How can you support your child in using games in moderation and why are there youth protection recommendations for games? Find out in the online lecture and ask your questions!

Forest excursion: Sustainability - what is it?

Experience sustainable forestry on a hike through the Rabenstein Forest! Find out how much wood grows in the forest, how many seeds end up on the ground and how much wood a single tree produces. You can also learn about the effects of forestry on the forest using a concrete example. How can we humans use wood sustainably? At several points on the active excursion, you can measure, count and calculate for yourself and be surprised at what the forest can do for us humans.
