Do you like cooking? Do you travel a lot? Do you have a business or a hobby for which you want to create content regularly? Media educator and author Sebastian Steger will show you in many practical steps how to create and maintain your own free blog with Wordpress. There are three steps to achieving your goal: Firstly, we design the layout and fill in the initial content. We use short text and photography exercises to train your instinct for good stories and appealing content. Now all that's missing is the audience: together we will place your blog with your desired readers.

Forum Ehrenamt: Creating and maintaining your own association website

An appealing association website should primarily inform its own members, for example about dates and current events of the association. At the same time, it should appeal to (other)
people who are simply looking for information or even want to get actively involved in club life. Setting up such a website is often not easy for inexperienced users at first.
In this course, you will learn more about the details of creating a website with free software using a practical example. We will learn some basics, choose a design, create the initial content and look at the integration of typical components such as a contact page, calendar (events) or image gallery. Answers to questions about data protection and security round off the course. By the end of the course, each participant should have understood the basics and have created at least the basic structure of a website; this can be further supplemented and expanded in the future. Basic knowledge of web design is helpful, but not a prerequisite.

Digital media is a source of great fascination and offers many opportunities. However, more and more people are speaking out who are no longer able to control their own media consumption. In fact, digital media appear to be particularly helpful for young people in coping with individual developmental tasks. Virtual space is more than a second reality. It adds a virtual component to the analogue space. This is why everyone who has contact with young people should approach this virtual space and familiarise themselves with it as part of young people's lives. What makes digital content so appealing? What can be done to restore or maintain the digital balance? The event will address these key issues in an inspiring way.

Vegan nutrition for every budget

More and more people are opting for a vegan diet. But vegan does not necessarily have to be healthy. It depends on how vegan nutrition is implemented. Practised correctly and following a few rules, it is one of the healthiest diets of all time and doesn't have to be expensive. The course teaches the theory and practice of how vegan nutrition can be organised in such a way that the body is supplied with everything it needs. Vegan dishes from savoury to sweet will be prepared and tasted.

Film and discussion: 2040 - we're saving the world!

What could the world look like - at best - in 2040? What can we do to leave a planet worth living on for future generations? Will we manage to stop climate change or limit it to a tolerable level? These questions are preoccupying the world more than ever. And they are the subject of the film "2040 - we're saving the world!" by Australian filmmaker Damon Gameau. He travelled around the world in a climate-neutral way to look for solutions to the climate policy problems of our time. He is able to show that there are already technologies and possibilities that would mitigate many problems, but are unfortunately not being utilised and applied consistently. Topics include power generation, sustainable agriculture, education and mobility.
The film (Australia 2019/length: 92 minutes) is intended to raise awareness, motivate and inspire hope. After the film screening, we invite you to a discussion.

Drought, storms and bark beetles: the current state of our forests

In recent years, storms and drought combined with an unprecedented mass proliferation of bark beetles have led to a catastrophic situation in the forests. The foothills of the Ore Mountains and the lower areas of the Ore Mountains are particularly affected by this development. The lecture will shed light on the current situation and the challenges that arise not only for forestry stakeholders and forest owners. Forestry expert Bernd Ranft will share his comprehensive knowledge and invite you to discuss the future of local forests.

Violence against the press: What's going on? Where is it going?

Freedom of the press is one of the highest goods of democracy, regulated in Germany in Article 5 of the Basic Law. Every year, Reporters Without Borders publishes a worldwide ranking of press freedom. Germany dropped three places in 2021 - mainly due to the increasing violence against journalists in recent years. Physical violence is occurring more and more frequently at demonstrations, among other things. But verbal attacks against media professionals are also becoming more frequent and more severe.
In this event, we will examine the causes of this development, the specific and verifiable incidents, the role of the police and the extent to which the willingness to use violence against media professionals is becoming a challenge to our democracy.
The evening's speaker will be Ine Dippmann, deputy studio manager at MDR in Leipzig and chairwoman of the German Journalists' Association of Saxony. After her presentation, there will be an opportunity to talk to each other.

Back pain is a burden and makes everyday life more difficult. A lack of exercise, incorrect posture, metabolic disorders and blockages can be the causes. Film and discussion: When Hitler stole the pink rabbit

To mark the International Day against Racism, which is celebrated annually on 21 March, we are showing the film "When Hitler Stole the Pink Rabbit" (D/2019). The film describes the situation of nine-year-old Anna and her family, who flee Germany shortly before the NSDAP's election victory in March 1933. The family wants to escape the threat of persecution, as Anna's father is a well-known critic of the Nazis. Anna experiences the escape painfully, she has to leave everything behind, including her beloved cuddly toy...
In the film, director Caroline Link impressively succeeds in showing the young girl's perspective and sensitising us to how flight and expulsion affect the souls and life plans of people, be they young people or adults. The film was based on Judith Kerr's autobiographical children's and youth book of the same title.
After the film (length: 119 minutes) there will be an opportunity for a discussion.

That's fake news! Countering disinformation on the net with reflection

The coronavirus pandemic and the war of aggression against Ukraine are impressive examples of how misleading information on the internet influences us. It unsettles us, stirs us up, leads to disputes or, in the worst case, to death. Disinformation is not a new phenomenon. However, technological change and so-called "platformisation" challenge us to deal with news in a confident and reflective manner. What is misleading content and how do we recognise it? Who are the actors? What makes disinformation campaigns successful and what part do we ourselves play in this?
This online event provides an understanding of the spread of disinformation through the digital transformation of the media public sphere. Building on this, participants will be given case studies to help them uncover misleading content.

Open ear, open heart - telephone counselling in voluntary work

0800 111 0 111 or 0800 111 0 222 - everyone has probably seen or at least heard of the telephone counselling numbers. "You can call there if you don't know what to do next" - this or something similar is what you hear when people talk about telephone counselling. But what worries can I go there with? What happens when I call them? Can I also get help online? Furthermore: What kind of people are these volunteers who dedicate themselves to the needs of others? What do you need to be able to do to have a helpful conversation? Can you learn how to do this, and if so, how long does it take?
This evening will give you a brief insight into the work of the Chemnitz telephone counselling service under the umbrella of Stadtmission Chemnitz e. V., and you will learn interesting facts about the training concept. Perhaps after the evening you will be interested in joining the telephone counselling team in the future. Telephone counselling works in a network throughout Germany, with a free telephone number, 24 hours a day, with volunteers. Before you can work on the phone, you need to undergo a thorough and interesting training programme.

Terezín (today Terezín/Czech Republic) was built between 1780 and 1790 as a border fortification against Prussia. From 1941 to 1945, the small garrison town in northern Bohemia served the Nazis as a stopover for transports to Auschwitz.
Around 150,000 people were deported there because they belonged to the "Jewish race". The Nazis called this "the Final Solution" and used Theresienstadt in their propaganda machinery: the facades of the town were renovated like a "Potemkin village". Shops, baths and cafés were set up and a film was made about the "Jewish settlement area". Even the International Red Cross was fooled by this farce. Many people from Chemnitz were also deported to Theresienstadt by the Nazis.
On this day, we invite you to learn about the history of Terezín and today's Terezín and to commemorate the victims and deportees.

Fact check on the Internet: Put on the "checker glasses" yourself

Anyone who informs themselves and communicates on the Internet these days needs completely new skills. We need to be able to judge sources, distinguish opinions from factual claims and check information from images, texts and videos. Otherwise, we run the risk of being manipulated against our will. We can face these numerous challenges with confidence and reflection if we put on the "checker glasses" ourselves.
The course includes an introduction to the topic of fact-checking using practical exercises. Participants will learn strategies and online tools to counter misleading content with confidence and reflection and to curb its spread.

Chemnitz city greenery: a tour (Part II)

Otto Werner (1854-1923) had a lasting influence on the urban greenery in Chemnitz. As city garden director, he created no less than 14 representative city squares and two large public parks. His successors expanded his green system in the style of their time. At the centre of the tour is a history of over 550 years of urban green development, starting in the late Middle Ages and continuing into modern times. It is told using selected green spaces and parks in the city.

What is the European Union and who makes policy there, how and for whom? What is the difference between the European Council and the Council of the European Union? How much power does the European Parliament have and what about the democratic deficit that is so often talked about?
In this interactive workshop, we want to take a closer look together at the European Union, which sometimes seems so far away. We will also discuss the status quo of the EU and the further development of the community of states.

Seeing with hands and ears

Do you have any idea how blind people "see" the world? How do they orientate themselves in everyday life without outside help? What aids and tricks are useful? What does the clock have to do with eating? After a more theoretical part, you can try your hand at small practical exercises: For example, you can eat a few small bites with a blindfold on, count money with your eyes closed or climb stairs with a cane.
If you are curious and want to find out more about the everyday life of blind and visually impaired people, this course offers you the opportunity to do so.
Exhibitions
"Ukrainian refugees. Two addresses - one fate" - a photo exhibition

Ukrainians who have fled to Chemnitz show their very personal refugee experiences in over 120 photographs. The exhibition is organised together with the "Fotofreunde Chemnitz 2020".
The 20 or so women and men who have come to Chemnitz over the past year will present a snapshot of their lives and refugee stories. In three parts, the time before the war in Ukraine, the war and the escape itself as well as the arrival and new beginning in Chemnitz are thematised and artistically processed. When selecting the documentary photos they took themselves, they were supported by the "Fotofreunde Chemnitz 2020", who also took additional accompanying photos on the topic in Chemnitz. The photographs are paired with selected works of art by children and young people, which were created in Chemnitz in the company of Ukrainian artist Viktoriia Karzyska-Katasonova.
"Not by bread alone" - exhibition on the reading book in simple language

Texts, photos and artworks from the book of the same name are presented in the exhibition on the project "Not from bread alone".
For the project "Not from bread alone", a total of 25 extraordinary Chemnitz residents were portrayed who are actively involved in shaping the city's society and whose stories are worth telling through their courageous actions and their commitment to respect, justice and tolerance. They were all asked the following questions: What is important to you in life? What moves you in Chemnitz? Why do you do such special things? Their answers were written down by the learners in the literacy project. They are stories about courage and doubt, love and trust, loneliness and envy. While working on the project, the participants actively engaged with social participation, political education and commitment. The book in simple language created in the project is intended to convey this to the readers.
25 functionally illiterate people were involved in the literacy project. It was designed, managed and carried out by Anja Hüttner and Denise Wagner.
