Workshop Media Practice - Visit to the editorial office of the Freie Presse

Journalists and the press have had to deal with massive accusations in recent years. If you take a closer look, it becomes clear that accusations and mistrust often arise due to a lack of or incorrect information about the work and principles of journalists' activities. In order to create a better understanding of this, the editorial office of the Freie Presse in Chemnitz is opening its doors. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to visit the editorial offices and gain an overview of the structure and areas of responsibility of the editorial team.

These questions will also be addressed during the workshop: How does a newsroom work in the digital age? How is news content selected and compiled? What about the separation of news and opinion? What framework conditions determine editorial work and what principles characterise it?

Members of the editorial team will also give an insight into the day-to-day work of journalists and answer questions from participants.

Countering cyberbullying - sensitisation, prevention, support

Social media, digital games and online services are used for discussion, sharing and production. But also insults and provokes. Hate comments and digital bullying jeopardise social cohesion.

In this event, we will look at forms of hate speech and cyberbullying. We will explain how these can be recognised and how those affected - i.e. children and young people, but also parents and educators - can deal with them.
Tips will also be given on children's media use and it will be shown where children and young people are online and how parents can support them in using the internet safely.

The revolution has a female face. The current role of women in Belarus

The images have moved and shocked the world: peaceful demonstrators in Belarus defied the brutal regime - time and time again. How did the revolt come about and what role did women play in it? Alice Bota and Ljubow Kaspjarowitsch discuss these questions.

Alice Bota is an author and journalist. She is currently reporting from Moscow as a foreign correspondent for DIE ZEIT. Lyubov Kaspiarovich is a Belarusian journalist from Minsk. She was arrested in May 2021 and sentenced to 15 days in prison.

Parental leave - for fathers too

Having a baby and being able to spend time with your child is a wonderful experience for both mums and dads. It marks the beginning of a new phase of life, which means many changes in daily life for both parents.

The regulations for parental leave and parental allowance are designed in such a way that the father can also stay with the baby and build up a deeply intimate relationship. However, parental leave is still largely only taken by the mother. Fathers often only take the two months explicitly provided for in the law. The legislator has provided a great deal of room for manoeuvre for both parents. Many fathers do not even realise that they are also entitled to parental leave at the birth of a child, and to the same extent as mothers. This means that fathers can take a total of three years of parental leave within the first eight years of a child's life and split this into up to three parts.

The presentation will focus on the options available to parents, as well as the statutory financial benefits, insurance issues and legal entitlements to time off work, among other things. But also about the numerous opportunities and possibilities that arise in this new phase of life: Family ties, relief, new opportunities for the mother, spending time with the family (work-life balance), travelling together or time for reflection and reorientation will all play a role.

Online lecture: Galaxies and black holes

Since the discovery of quasars around 50 years ago, there has been increasing evidence that black holes are located in the centres of Milky Way systems. High-resolution measurements have now provided convincing evidence for this hypothesis - at the centre of our own Milky Way.

Prof Reinhard Genzel, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, presents the latest results of the measurements and the findings derived for research into black holes in his online lecture. The researcher illustrates the formation of black holes in the early universe using the data obtained. He will also explain the new developments in the fields of adaptive optics and interferometry at ESO's new large telescope, which made the measurements possible in the first place.

Rediscover the world with your electronic everyday companion. Learn how to use your Android smartphone/tablet in a simple and practical way. In this course, you will learn step-by-step how to change your settings, send and receive text messages and emails and how to take pictures and videos with your device's camera. By the end of the course, you will also know how to download additional programmes, so-called apps, for your smartphone/tablet and how to use internet radios and media libraries.

With PowerPoint, lectures and presentations can be supported visually and audibly in order to present their content in an impressive and memorable way. This course gives you the opportunity to create your first presentation step by step. You will learn the first steps with PowerPoint, i.e. how to work with presentations, create and design drawing objects and use organisation charts and diagrams effectively.

The Chemnitz municipal swimming pool - modern water technology in a historic setting

Take a look behind the scenes and see how the Chemnitz municipal swimming pool works. Designed in the Bauhaus style and opened in 1935, it was one of the largest and most modern indoor swimming pools in Europe. After several refurbishments to the building's technical infrastructure, the municipal swimming pool with its modern pool technology opens its doors for a tour of the pool's technical facilities.

Many parents think a lot about the right nutrition for their child. In everyday life, however, there is often little time for shopping and preparing meals. In addition, all the nutritional information can be overwhelming. It's not easy!
With a series of courses, we would like to help you get an overview that is worth knowing and practical.

My child doesn't eat vegetables. What should I do? Is my child too fat? This event answers many questions about optimal nutrition for children aged zero to six and provides suggestions for an active and healthy everyday life.

The fascinating world of bees

Honey bees are colony-forming insects and are among the oldest farm animals in the world. They produce the valuable product honey and play an important role in the pollination of crops. However, the numerous wild bees are also important pollinators, especially for many wild plants, and are therefore an important component of an intact natural environment. For some wild plants, pollination by wild bees is vital. The lecture gives an insight into the life of a bee colony. It will also show what everyone can do to protect wild bees, which, unlike honey bees, are actually endangered.

We provide answers to your questions, inform you about the reality of children and young people's lives and pass on practical recommendations for action. With lots of tips, we show you how you can work together as a family to create a healthy upbringing with media.

"When the digital balance gets out of kilter" - Critical media consumption among young people

In addition to the fascination and opportunities offered by digital media, more and more people are speaking out about the fact that they are no longer able to organise their media consumption in a self-determined way. In fact, digital media appear to be particularly helpful for young people in coping with individual developmental tasks. Virtual space is more than just a second reality. It adds a virtual component to the analogue space. This is why everyone who has contact with young people, and especially professionals, should approach this virtual space and familiarise themselves with it as part of young people's lives. What might be the strong appeal of digital content? What can be done to restore or maintain the digital balance? The event will address these key issues in an inspiring way.

The diabolical five - about the power of Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft

There are millions of apps and websites on the internet and billions of users. However, the data of this gigantic digital world is concentrated in a few large companies: Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft. These "devilish five" have divided up the most important markets. They dominate the market for search engines, PC operating systems, app stores, online retail, online advertising and social networks, among others. An accumulation of data is an accumulation of power. And this is highly dangerous for society. IT companies can potentially use their wealth of data to zoom into the lives of every individual and population group. Since Edward Snowden, we also know that secret services are also keenly interested in this data.

In this lecture, journalist and author Stefan Mey presents the power of these internet giants: What is all part of their empires, what personal data do they accumulate and why is this problematic? He will also show ways to break their data power.

Riddles and secrets in Richard Wagner's "Parsifal"

In December 1992, the Chemnitz Opera House was reopened with this work after four years of construction work. Very fitting, as Wagner himself described "Parsifal" as a "stage consecration festival". But what is actually being consecrated? The stage - or rather the audience, who can experience a "consecration" into a deep truth? What could this truth consist of? Using the symbolism of the plot and the music, we embark on an exciting search for clues.

Music teacher Thomas Kauba will take you on this musical journey of discovery on the electric piano and explain the context in which the work was created using excerpts from it.

From the blooming orchid meadows and the dream beaches of the Gargano, the journey takes you to the provincial capital of Bari. At the very heel of the boot you will see the baroque city of Lecce. Hike through the vineyards around Maduria with the lecturer and experience the 2019 European Capital of Culture Matera with its impressive Sassi in neighbouring Basilicata. And be amazed by the history of the trulli in Alberobello.

How new media are changing our democracy

The coronavirus pandemic is not the first time the use of the media has changed. In addition to traditional journalistic media such as radio, television and newspapers, the internet and social networks are becoming increasingly important when we consume information and content. What's more, everyone is not just a reader on these platforms, but can also become an author and spread their opinion or unverified information. What is this change in the media doing to our society?

In this event, journalist and author Thomas Ammann and media educator Jonas Weber will explore the mechanisms and political impact of the media on us and our democracy. Together with the audience, the two will explore the changing role of the media and show the impact of large digital corporations such as Facebook on social coexistence. Algorithms, filter bubbles and the protection of personal rights are just some of the aspects that will be discussed.

Thomas Ammann is a journalist, TV producer and former deputy editor-in-chief of Stern magazine. Jonas Weber works as a media educator on the subject of media skills at Social Web macht Schule gGmbH.

"I'll do it with my left hand!" - recognising and promoting children's handedness

The so-called retraining of children from genetic left-handers to pseudo-right-handers is also an issue in our society. In an informative practical lecture, the course offers the latest scientific findings on the genetic possibility of being left- or right-handed. Which proven physical indicators point to genetic handedness throughout life? How can you recognise and promote your children's handedness? What health consequences can result from a lack of handedness from infancy to adulthood? You will receive answers to these and other questions during the course.

klimafit - Climate change on our doorstep! What can I do?

People around the world are calling on politicians to take decisive action to protect the climate. The corona pandemic has also made it clear how vulnerable our lives are to external influences and what this can mean for our everyday lives. We are increasingly realising that the effects of climate change are also affecting Germany, for example: more hot days over 30 degrees, droughts, heavy rainfall events and rising sea levels.

Climate protection and climate adaptation are key tasks for local authorities. In order to be able to fulfil these tasks, local authorities need citizens who get involved in the community, familiarise themselves with the background and know how they can protect and adapt in their personal environment.

The innovative Climate Fit course provides this information. Over the course of six evenings, you will be familiarised with the scientific basics of climate and climate change. The focus is on the changes that climate change is bringing about in Germany and in your region. The course also aims to provide suggestions for joint action and effective climate protection.

WWF Germany and the Helmholtz Research Network on Regional Climate Change and Humans (REKLIM) have developed this course. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag.

Successful participation is recognised with a certificate at the end of the course.

The art of the short message - or: How does the tabloid press work?

Revolverblatt, Yellow Press, Boulevard-Gazette - there are many terms for newspapers that are sold on the streets every day with big headlines for little money.
The accusation that the tabloid press is superficial, short-sighted and sensationalist is a common one. Readers are addressed here on an emotional level. Attention is fought for in large letters and sometimes drastic words. Images and texts speak a clear and concise language. But what is the art behind reducing complex information to short, clear sentences? And what role do images and headlines play in this?
Mario Adolphsen, head of copywriting at Morgenpost Sachsen, will provide answers to these questions in his lecture and in the subsequent discussion.
