Lecture and discussion about illegal art prints in Karl-Marx-Stadt in the 1980s. In this evening format, Andreas Bochmann, moderator and contemporary witness, and the artist Joerg Waehner will talk about unofficial artistic practice, improvised production sites and the significance of aesthetic freedom under the conditions of state control. The exchange will provide an insight into a barely visible chapter of regional art history and its repercussions to this day.

Reading and discussion on Joerg Waehner's Polish novel "Das schaffen wir". The artist Joerg Waehner reads from his novel and talks about the role of the Polish Solidarnosc movement, its influence on political changes in Eastern Europe and its effect on a young apprentice printer in Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1980. The event combines personal memories with historical context and invites an open exchange.

Pruning young trees - theory and practice - course

The correct pruning of fruit trees is a complex subject. The aim of the course is to give a rough overview of pruning fruit trees and to delve a little deeper into the care of young trees. When is the best time to prune? How much pruning is good for the tree? Stone fruit and pome fruit - what is the difference? The course includes a theoretical and a practical part. The latter focusses in particular on training pruning for young trees. On a meadow in Schloßchemnitz, you will have the opportunity to carry out practical pruning of young trees under the guidance of a certified tree warden.

On Chinese climate policy - lecture

The People's Republic of China is responsible for a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions; however, the country has also set itself ambitious climate policy targets. The lecture will present the main features of China's climate policy and its global significance: China's climate target, the so-called dual target, envisages a peak in CO2 emissions "before 2030" and the achievement of climate neutrality by 2060. How are the targets in the five-year plans being implemented? What role does China play in international climate policy and in the global energy transition? And last but not least: What are the potentials and limits of cooperation with China on climate protection?

Guided tour of the Hoheneck Memorial - Guided tour

The tour and the discussion with contemporary witnesses provide an introduction to the history of the former Hoheneck prison and shed light on political criminal justice in the GDR. The prison is synonymous with around 24,000 women, some of whom were imprisoned there for political reasons. The guided tour provides basic information on the history of the building, the lives of the prisoners, the significance of this place in German history and the political background. We invite you to get to know the memorial, which opened in summer 2024.

Germany is China's most important trading partner in Europe, particularly in the fields of mechanical and plant engineering as well as the chemical and automotive industries. At the same time, economic interdependencies, subsidy policies and the trade dispute between China and the USA are leading to uncertainties and distortions. There is also a political debate: does dependence on China pose security policy challenges for Germany and Europe? The lecture will explore these questions and provide a basic overview. The speaker, Dr Julia Haes, has been working intensively on the Chinese economy and history for ten years. She founded the China Institute for German Business (CIDW) in 2021.

Sinologist Prof Dr Klaus Mühlhahn sees the history of China as a great struggle for an independent Chinese modernity: since the late 17th century, it has been riddled with crises, reforms, revolutions and wars. At the same time, however, the country has shown great resilience and perseverance. On this evening, the author will present his 2021 book "History of Modern China. From the Qing Dynasty to the Present". We invite you to join us for a discussion with the author, who has been researching the culture and history of modern China at Freie Universität Berlin for many years.

The country has also specialised in processes for processing rare earths. The control of exports of these raw materials and associated technologies has strong economic and political consequences for many companies and trading partners. The lecture will provide a basic insight into the current situation and shed light on China's strategic role as a producer of raw materials

Exhibition opening: "Together we are unbearable". The independent women's movement in the GDR - exhibition

Women in the GDR have been coming together in informal circles since 1980. From the very beginning, many criticised the situation of women in the GDR and questioned the state doctrine of equal rights for women. A nationwide movement soon developed. In the democratic awakening of 1989 and 1990, its protagonists sat at the round tables and demanded a gender-equal society. The exhibition tells the story of a social movement in a dictatorship in four chapters. For the first time in this form, the non-governmental GDR women's movement is presented from the perspective of its protagonists.
The exhibition can be seen at the adult education centre from 30 March 2026 to 24 April 2026. This event is a cooperation between the Evangelisches Forum Chemnitz and the Volkshochschule Chemnitz.
