Sustainable travelling - how, where and with whom?

After the end of the pandemic, we are finally looking forward to travelling again. But how can climate protection and individual travel be combined? Dr André Matthes, Head of Natural Textiles and Sustainability at the Chair of Textile Technologies at Chemnitz University of Technology, has the answer. He has been cycling with his family for 16 years and is also very familiar with car sharing when travelling and outdoor equipment. We invite you to talk to him about sustainable travelling and share your own experiences with others.

Insect summer
Location: Nature Conservation Centre in the Botanical Garden, Leipziger Straße 147
Participation: free of charge
On the occasion of the NABU insect summer, go in search of little crawlers. The animals can be counted and identified using beaker magnifiers. You can also marvel at and even touch rose beetles, woodlice and millipedes in terrariums. A practical activity is the construction of an insect hotel, which can be taken home afterwards.

Buildings can be demolished and rebuilt, memories cannot. Jan and his parents don't talk much about today and certainly not about yesterday. It is only when Mr Kern appears that the fragile balance of the family begins to waver: what was Jan's mother's relationship with Mr Kern's father? And what do the Kerns have to do with Georg Baselitz's art? Jan continues to work his way through the silence of several generations, delving into the history of the Baselitz brothers, the history of his parents and realising that the present is not only made up of his own past.
In his new novel "Raumfahrer" (2021, dtv), Lukas Rietzschel talks about the experiences of the post-reunification and post-war generations, about the differences between East and West and about how differently people's lives can turn out.
On this evening, he will read from the novel and enter into dialogue with the audience.
This event is a co-operation between the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

What to do about tinnitus and noise sensitivity?

In the big city, we are exposed to an enormous amount of noise sources, from road traffic to open-plan offices to department stores' or building site noise. More and more people are suffering from constant noise pollution and stress levels are rising. For more than 50 per cent of people suffering from tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears), stress is the main cause. It is important to develop a different way of dealing with noise and stress, as often enough sources of stress or noise cannot be switched off and concentration and performance often suffer as a result.
In addition to imparting knowledge about the background to tinnitus and noise sensitivity, the course provides suggestions and exercises for general stress reduction (with music and sounds), listening habits, silence and noise perception. We will develop new internal and external protection options, learn to create a greater distance to noise and in this way improve our own well-being.

Exploring flowering areas: Insect paradises in the city centre
Meeting point: seed garden, Bunte Gärten on the corner of Augustusburger Str./ Tschaikowskistraße; destination: Nordpark

In recent years, a variety of flowering areas have been created throughout Chemnitz. On 15 June, you will have the opportunity to explore the botanical and animal biodiversity by bike in a small group. During the tour, you will receive information about the ecological importance of the meadows for the city as well as tips on planting and maintaining them.
The event is a cooperation between the Environmental Centre and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the nature city project "Chemnitz blossoms".

Fact and fake. On the new power of disinformation and the art of talking to each other

How are opinions formed in a networked, highly nervous world? What are the causes of the perceptible fragility of knowledge and a palpable crisis of truth and trust? Bernhard Pörksen, Professor of Media Studies, vividly and concretely analyses the patterns of excitement in the digital age and shows how our idea of truth, the dynamics of revelations, the character of debates and the idea of authority and power are changing under current media conditions. Today, everyone has become a broadcaster and the influence of established journalism is dwindling. In this situation, the intelligent use of information is part of general education and should be taught at school. Media literacy has become an existential question for democracy. But Bernhard Pörksen will also talk about how media literacy can be achieved.
Bernhard Pörksen teaches at the University of Tübingen. He researches the power of public outrage and the future of reputation and publishes essays and commentaries in many newspapers in addition to academic articles. His books with the philosopher Heinz von Foerster "Truth is the invention of a liar" and the communication psychologist Friedemann Schulz von Thun "Communication as an art of living" became bestsellers. In 2008, Bernhard Pörksen was voted "Professor of the Year". His book was published in 2018: "Die große Gereiztheit. Ways out of collective agitation" and 2020 "The art of talking to each other. On dialogue in society and politics" together with the communication psychologist Friedemann Schulz von Thun.

Introductory course on autism

Autism is a congenital, incurable and serious perception and information processing disorder of the brain. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is considered a profound developmental disorder. The course explains the basics of the autism spectrum - including terms, categorisation and classification. It also deals with the consequences and special features of typical perceptual processing in people on the autism spectrum. You will also learn important aspects of dealing with those affected.
Ask your questions and start a dialogue. The lecturer works at the Chemnitz Autism Centre.

How free is the press? The basics of journalistic work

While the media landscape in Germany is increasingly changing, the press is facing ever-increasing pressure. In particular, the freedom and political independence of the press is constantly being called into question. But just how free is the press? What legal regulations exist with regard to press work? Where do editorial offices get their information from? And how do they guarantee objective reporting?
Torsten Kleditzsch, editor-in-chief of the Freie Presse in Chemnitz, addresses these and other questions. Based on his many years of experience in editorial work, he will report on the processes and principles of this work and the day-to-day work of journalists. In addition to the technical input, he will be available to answer questions from participants and thus offer the opportunity for dialogue.

What borders do we need? Ethics and politics of migration

European politicians are still struggling to reform the asylum system. The public debate is often dominated by buzzwords, false factual claims and bogus solutions.
In this interview, Gerald Knaus and Matthias Hoesch discuss which ethical principles need to be taken into account in migration policy, how humane borders can be possible in reality and how such ideas can be incorporated into a policy that is capable of winning a majority.
Gerald Knaus is an Austrian sociologist and migration researcher. He is co-founder and chairman of the think tank "European Stability Initiative" and was significantly involved in the EU-Turkey agreement of 18 March 2016 between the EU and Turkey.
Matthias Hoesch is a philosopher and one of Germany's leading migration ethicists. He conducts research at the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics" at the University of Münster.
This event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Esslingen district and SüdOst adult education centres in the Munich district.

Consuming food well and storing it correctly

A lot of food ends up in the bin because it spoils quickly. However, this food can often be saved if it is stored and processed correctly. Thomas Seidel from Direkt vom Beet e.V. will share all kinds of interesting facts about food storage.
