Appreciative and at eye level - non-violent communication for the workplace
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20, course room 4.21
Participation: 60 euros, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/s2338602
In professional contact with people, protégés, colleagues or superiors, dialogue is an important element in expressing one's own concerns and communicating about the intentions of others. Appreciative communication is a secure basis for making things happen together, resolving conflicts and ultimately always strengthening relationships.
In non-violent communication (NVC) according to Marshall B. Rosenberg, the method is less important than the attitude with which conversations and meetings are conducted.
The course provides an introduction to the NVC method with a special focus on the professional context. Practical exercise situations offer an initial application - always with reference to everyday working life and personal experience. The skills for peaceful connection can not only be developed during the course, but also grow and strengthen through regular practice in everyday (professional) life.

Location: thinKplace - Creative Hub, Reitbahnstraße 80
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S2339107
Blackbox Gardening is a slightly different gardening philosophy. According to this philosophy, gardeners largely leave it up to the plants themselves to decide where to sow their seeds and in which places they feel particularly at home. The result is a garden that provides surprises every year. The course introduces garden design ideas as well as helpful methods to ensure that seeds and cuttings grow successfully.
To ensure that your colourful garden is also an ideal habitat for native insects, you can be inspired by the seed mixtures from Nachhall e. V.. You are also welcome to bring your own seeds and cuttings to swap with other participants.
The event is a co-operation between the seed garden Nachhall e. V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Who is actually demonstrating? Focus on the Chemnitz protests
Venue: Weltecho, Annaberger Straße 24
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S2310170
Hardly any other topic has characterised Chemnitz and its perception in recent years as much as the death of Daniel H. and the subsequent demonstrations in 2018. At that time, numerous people took to the streets to demonstrate against migration policy. A solidarity between the far right and other citizens could be observed.
As part of the measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic, "We are the people!" was once again chanted through the streets of Chemnitz in 2020. While the number of demonstrators gradually declined as the pandemic subsided, the Monday protests have become much more popular again since the start of the war in Ukraine at the beginning of 2022 and the energy crisis at the end of 2022. But many people in Chemnitz are wondering who is actually taking part. Who are the people who persistently march every Monday? A panel discussion will address these and other questions and engage in dialogue with the audience about the protest culture in Chemnitz.
The event is a cooperation between the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Saxony and the Weltcheo.*
NOTE: Respectful and non-discriminatory interaction is very important to the organisers. Disruptions or insults will lead to exclusion from the event. The organisers reserve the right to exercise their domiciliary rights and to refuse entry to or exclude from the event persons who belong to right-wing extremist parties or organisations, are associated with the right-wing extremist scene or have already made racist, nationalist, anti-Semitic or other inhumane statements in the past.
This also means that persons who make anti-democratic, racist, nationalist or other inhuman, marginalising statements will be excluded from the event. The making of video and audio recordings is prohibited; exceptions must be agreed with the organisers in advance.
* Amended on 14 June 2023. The adult education centre withdrew as co-organiser at the end of May.

Location: terminus of line 32, Dresdner Straße
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S2339011
Experience sustainable forestry on a hike through the Zeisigwald forest! With forest district manager Ullrich Göthel, you will find out how much wood grows in the forest. Together you will investigate exciting questions. How many seeds end up on the ground? How old do the grown trees become? How much wood does a single tree produce?
You will also learn about the effects of forestry on the forest using a concrete example. Why and how can we humans use wood sustainably? What would be a waste of timber stocks and what would be a good precaution for the future?
At several points on the active excursion, you can measure, count, calculate and be surprised by what the forest can do for us humans.
This event is a co-operation between the State Enterprise Sachsenforst and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Location: TIETZ, course room 4.07
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S231M040

Isn't there someone behind this? How conspiracy myths work
Location: KaffeeSatz, Zietenstraße 40
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S2310180
At first glance, it seems that conspiracy myths have captivated more and more people in recent years. However, what is new is not their spread, but above all their increased visibility, which is favoured by social media. According to the Americanist Michael Butter, conspiracy myths are characterised by three basic assumptions: Nothing happens by chance. Nothing is as it seems. Everything is connected.
Sociologist Felix Schilk would like to explain exactly how conspiracy myths work, why people believe in them, when they become dangerous and what we can do if we are confronted with them in our environment in a lecture followed by a discussion.
Monday, 19 June, 6.45 to 8.15 pm
Media framing in the field of tension between China and Taiwan: What can and should we believe?
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.59
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S231M120
Fake news and polarisation are increasingly dominating the everyday lives of journalists worldwide. As media users, we also ask ourselves: What is still true, and where does false information dominate our everyday media life?
Reporting on China in particular - and the associated escalating conflict over Taiwan in the South China Sea - presents us with the challenge of knowing what is "really" happening in the Far East.
In this course, participants first learn what media frames are, how they can categorise Western and non-Western journalistic sources and against what background they should form an opinion. In the second part, they practise this in a very practical way on the current topic of China-Taiwan with various newspaper articles from Germany and the
(South) East Asian region. The aim is to analyse and classify journalistic sources from Germany and abroad in a media-competent manner.
This course is sponsored by the Saxon State Media Authority (SLM).
Note: Basic knowledge of English is an advantage for analysing sources - but is not a prerequisite for participation.
Thursday, 22 June, 7 to 8.30 pm
What does home mean? Lecture and discussion
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.07
Participation: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/S2310200
What does home mean? The answers are manifold, home has long since become a controversial term. Some see it as a home, a regional or even national culture that needs to be preserved. Others contrast it with the whole world as a home, global exchange and diversity, which do not need any places. Home as a feeling is always associated with emotions. In her book "Heimat. Geschichte eines Missverständnisses", Susanne Scharnowski aims to strengthen the factual argument. The literary scholar takes up the historical debates surrounding home right up to the present day.
The author presents various approaches. We invite you to come and talk to her about the concept and feeling of home.
