Experience the traditional world of saunas with the Finnish Wenik ritual in the Golfbad Chemnitz. You can expect not only the soothing warmth of the sauna, but also interesting and amusing insights into the meaning and use of the sauna in Finland. With its special traditions, Finnish sauna culture is part of the intangible world cultural heritage. As a culinary highlight, special daily specials are offered that perfectly complement the sauna experience. Look forward to a Finnish-style time-out for body and soul.
The sauna days take place during the regular opening hours of the Golfbad. At 1 p.m. you can look forward to an entertaining presentation on the importance of the sauna in Finland in the relaxation area.

Small but important - interesting facts about insects

The event will focus on the most common insects that live in domestic gardens. Various insects will first be presented in a lecture and then later searched for and identified together in the botanical garden under expert guidance. A talk about bees rounds off the event.

Finland's long road to the west
An excursion into our shared European history

Putin's war in Ukraine has prompted Finland and Sweden to abandon their long-standing foreign policy orientation as non-aligned states and join NATO. The significance of this decision only becomes clear in a historical context. The history of Finland in particular, which belonged to the Swedish kingdom for centuries and later came under the rule of the Russian tsars, is fatefully linked to that of its neighbour to the east. The state independence gained in 1918 in the turmoil of the Russian Revolution was repeatedly threatened: by a bloody civil war between Reds and Whites, by Stalin's invasion in 1939 and by the continuation of the war against the Soviet Union as Nazi Germany's "brother in arms". During the Cold War, Finland was a country caught between East and West, as its sovereignty was restricted by a friendship and mutual assistance pact with Moscow. This also made the Nordic country an interesting partner for the GDR.
The speaker for the evening is Horst Bacia, who was an editor and foreign correspondent for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for many years and lives in Helsinki.

Nutrition, food and agriculture in Finland

The fact that it is colder in Finland and that most of the country is covered with forests and lakes seems to be common knowledge. What is less well known, for example, is that 13 per cent of the oats consumed in the EU come from Finland. Dietary habits there are also somewhat different from ours. In the lecture, you will learn how this is linked to nature in the north and to Finnish culture. What characterises agriculture and nutrition in Finland? What is different from Germany?
The speaker, Dr Friedrich-Karl Lücke, has taught food at Fulda University of Applied Sciences for many years, is a member of the German-Finnish Society and the Göttingen Food Council and has known Finland from numerous visits and working stays since the 1970s. Come and talk to an expert about the specialities of Finland.

Benny Morris: "1948 - The first Arab-Israeli war". Book presentation and discussion

In his monograph "1948 - The First Arab-Israeli War", historian Benny Morris sheds light on the background and events that led to the end of the British Mandate in Palestine, the fragmentation of Arab-Palestinian society and ultimately the birth of the State of Israel. The focus is on the immediate reaction to the founding of the state: the pan-Arab war of aggression.
Translated into German by Johannes Bruns and Peter Kathmann, the meticulous analysis of Israeli and international archives accessible since the 1980s provides a clear, documentary view of the history of the 1948 war and its political and military actors. In the debates about Israel and the Palestinian national movement, about Zionism and expulsion, this standard work makes an important contribution to historical clarification.Johannes Bruns and Peter Kathmann will present the book and report on the background to the translation.

FOKUS EUROPA - Country Special Finland: Closing concert with the Elina Arlin Trio

Finnish poetry, folk music, soulful songwriting and fresh arrangements: the Elina Arlin Trio has arranged Finnish classics from various decades into their own acoustic versions. The trio around Elina Arlin (vocals, guitar) consists of pianist Henri Mäntylä (Timo Lassy, Johanna Förtsi, Aura Flow, Nina Mya, among others) and drummer Mikko Arlin (Aili Ikonen, Fifth Avenue, Shava, William Suvanne Quartet, among others).
The trio also plays pieces from the formation "Einoa". These are Elina Arlin's own compositions to texts by the Finnish poet Eino Leino. Her first album "Rauhan" was released in May 2022. Elina Arlin combines Finnish poetry, folk music and songwriting.

"somehow Jewish" - in conversation with blogger Juna Grossmann

Juna Grossmann started the blog "irgendwiejuedisch.com" in 2008 and a lot has happened since then. What began as a way to write about life in Berlin as a liberal Jewish woman, about the problems in and sometimes outside the community, was intended to open a window on Jewish life in Germany. Today, she writes about everything that moves her - her work in museums and memorials, her life in the GDR, political and artistic matters, her experiences with anti-Semitism and her view of global events. In this online event, Juna Grossmann will talk about her blog and her way of observing and writing. We invite you to join her in conversation.

Fast Fashion: Why should I care?

The workshop takes you on a journey to the countries where textiles are produced and opens up a view of a globalised textile chain. Dr André Matthes, Head of Textile Sustainability and Digital Education at the Chair of Textile Technologies at Chemnitz University of Technology, will vividly explain the journey our clothes take from the cotton field to our wardrobes. A T-shirt is worth more than its retail price, the true costs are significantly higher. A T-shirt contains a number of resources whose origin and use often remain unclear. Together with the workshop participants, Matthes takes a critical look behind the scenes of the fashion industry and also discusses his own consumer behaviour. The workshop aims to encourage people to think about a healthy, sustainable and conscious clothing style and facilitate an active dialogue.

"I'm not allowed to play with you anymore because you're Jewish..." A childhood in Chemnitz under the swastika - reading and discussion

A childhood friendship on the Kaßberg in Chemnitz ended with these words in the 1930s. Ilse Rau, née Benda, the child of a Jewish textile entrepreneur and a Protestant mother, experiences marginalisation, disenfranchisement and the economic decline of her family. She was ten years young when her mother fled with her to Belgium. Stateless and "illegal", they both survive in occupied Brussels. 70 years later, Ilse Rau writes about this time in her book "My Mara Years". After the end of the war, both dare to make a new start in southern Germany. What the daughter succeeds in doing, the mother is denied. Ilse Rau became the mother of nine children and worked as a psychotherapist into old age.
We invite you to a reading and discussion. Beate Rau, Ilse Rau's daughter, will read from her mother's memoirs. With an introduction by Peter Blechschmidt.

Learn to fly a multicopter - for pilots of all ages

Learn how to fly safely with your own multicopter from an experienced pilot and instructor at the Jahnsdorf airfield. You will receive instruction in multicopter flying in accordance with EU drone regulations. A special experience is the sightseeing flight over the airfield with your own device. At the end, the instructor will show you his own aerial photographs of Dresden in the café at the airport.
The fee for children and young people can only be partially reduced in accordance with the vhs Chemnitz terms and conditions due to the aerodrome hire fee. In the event of unsuitable flying weather, the course will be postponed to an alternative date.

For children and young people up to the age of 18
Here you will not only learn the magic of the "spoken word", but also the power of your own voice. In just a few hours, you will create stage texts and performances from all the topics that are important to you, which you can present on stage with a lot of self-confidence and the best thing is: you don't need a slam and there are no assessments.
By the end of the course, you will also know how to direct, develop your own plays, publish a book and use stage equipment correctly. You don't need any previous knowledge, just go for it! Your seminar leader Jessy James LaFleur has been on stage herself as a rapper and spoken word artist for 18 years and will teach you one thing above all: that you have an incredible amount of potential.
Jessy James LaFleur is a nomad by conviction, spoken word activist, entrepreneur and rapper. Born in East Belgium, she performs her socially critical and stirring poetry in three different languages and has conquered stages in more than 30 countries. She is the founder of the "SpokenWord Academy", which is unique in Europe, and was honoured for her work as a "Cultural and Creative Pilot Germany" in 2020. Since 2022, the academy has been part of the "Neulandgewinner" funding programme. She created the collective "LOst Poets" for young East German voices from rural areas, runs workshops in prisons and schools and published the SpokenWord album "DOMA" and the feminist anthology "Aufbruch ist weiblich". She lives in Berlin and Prague.

Chemnitz is a green city. Green spaces in the city have not been created by chance. In many cases, they are the result of foresighted urban planning, especially during the times of urban growth in the 19th and 20th centuries. However, drastic developments in a shrinking city, war and demolitions have in turn created open spaces that today form a rather unknown network of green areas. We want to explore the city's green culture together on a walk.
