"I have never met a Jew ..." Life stories from Germany. Reading and discussion

"I've never met a Jew." Most Jews have heard this sentence before. At the reading, actor and author Gerhard Haase-Hindenberg will talk about the diversity of Jewish life in Germany. About Dagmar, who applies for the police force behind her Jewish father's back; about Marina, who came to Germany from the former USSR and is only confronted with her family's religious past here; and about David, the jazz musician from New York who discovers the "most Jewish city" in Germany in Berlin. There is the Jewish army doctor who deliberately wears a kippah even when on duty and the research assistant at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre who derives his Jewish faith from mathematics, and the stories of people who converted to Judaism of their own free will are told. The author interweaves all these stories of the everyday lives of Jews living in Germany, their stories and experiences, their hopes and the threats posed by rising anti-Semitism with explanations of symbols, religious practice and history. We invite you to a reading and discussion.
Gerhard Haase-Hindenberg is a trained actor and has also worked for many years as an author for television and radio programmes and as a journalist, including for Die Welt/Welt am Sonntag, Die ZEIT and other daily newspapers. He has been an author for the Jüdische Allgemeine for several years.

Holistic measures for a healthy thyroid gland

Thyroid disorders, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, manifest themselves in a variety of symptoms that can affect daily life - from palpitations and insomnia to feeling cold, listlessness and chronic fatigue.
In this course, you will gain an overview of the possible causes of thyroid disorders and learn about various holistic approaches that can improve your well-being. It will look at how diet, lifestyle and stress management can support thyroid function.

Language and democracy: How does populist rhetoric work?

Modern democracies are facing major challenges. These include crises and insecurities, climate change, wars and violence, geopolitical shifts, social inequalities, cultural tensions, economic hardship and political divisions. Dissatisfaction or feelings of insecurity and powerlessness in particular can be taken up by anti-democratic movements, radicalised and turned against the democratic system in a populist manner. Typical linguistic patterns are used, which can be described and analysed in detail.
The event will present and discuss the rhetorical means of populism across all party boundaries. The speaker is a linguist and has been working on the topics of the evening for many years.

Off to the forest - a forest experience for families with children aged 5 and over

The body-mind relationship in philosophy - yesterday and today

It is about the relationship between the physical (body, brain, body) and the mental (spiritual, psychic). Descartes was the first to formulate this problem and his answer also leaves a deep gap between body and mind. Today's philosophy of the mind is strongly influenced by the natural sciences. To this day, there is still no satisfactory explanation as to why processes in the brain are experienced in one way and not another (e.g. as pain). In his book "What is outside my mind and what I can know about it", the speaker discusses perspectives on approaching the topic based on personal experience.

Speaking for democracy - communication training against right-wing slogans and anti-democracy (basic training)

Discrimination is part of everyday life. People of a different skin colour, sexual orientation or religion are repeatedly subjected to hostility, exclusion and condescending comments. But people who are politically active and campaign for democracy are also verbally attacked.
In this communication training course, you will work together to develop simple methods for responding to and countering anti-democratic statements and right-wing slogans. You will learn about the mechanisms of prejudice and discrimination, look at your own attitudes and discuss ways and means of dealing with inhuman statements and attitudes.

Open trial. Documentation centre on the NSU complex and critical walk in the former Fritz Heckert area

The event follows the traces of the National Socialist Underground (NSU). In the first part, the exhibition OFFENER PROZESS in the Documentation Centre on the NSU complex creates a space to commemorate the victims of the NSU and shed light on the background to the crimes. It tells of everyday life in Germany, of violence, resistance and blind spots. The subsequent neighbourhood walk is dedicated to the architectural, social and political history of the Fritz Heckert area. One thematic focus is on the neighbourhood as a place of residence, networking area and crime scene of the NSU. The exhibition also explores the question of how the NSU network was anchored in Chemnitz and what a locally connected reappraisal might look like. We invite you to visit the exhibition and take a walk around the neighbourhood.

Laughter yoga to get to know each other

Laughter yoga is a holistic method that releases endorphins - so-called happiness hormones. It has been proven that laughter yoga reduces stress, stimulates the cardiovascular system, reduces pain, boosts the immune system and cleanses and strengthens the respiratory tract. When you laugh, around 100 muscles are activated and all internal organs are massaged vigorously. The course teaches the basics of laughter yoga and invites you to try it out.
