Read the city together with lecturer Dr Urs Luczak, understand how and why individual urban spaces and districts have developed in the way they have, and then discuss whether their design still meets our needs today.
This time we will explore the Grüna district, with a stop for refreshments at the end and plenty of time for discussion. The aim is to understand the city and discuss possible ideas for future urban development.

Post-war development in Chemnitz city centre - a city tour

After the severe destruction of Chemnitz city centre during the Second World War, it had to be extensively rebuilt. Beginning with the buildings in the "national tradition" style, the city centre underwent an architectural transformation towards post-war modernism. This still characterises the face of our city centre today.
Is this development really worthy of preservation? The tour will address this question, with a historical review and current trends.

Civil society in Eastern Europe: guarantor of democracy?

After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the dominant idea was that citizens active in civil society could not only bring down authoritarian regimes, but were also a prerequisite for a functioning democracy. Today, this picture no longer seems so clear-cut. For example, anti-democratic protest movements can increasingly be observed in the former communist part of Europe, and illiberal regimes such as in Hungary are stabilising despite resistance on the streets.
Based on current protests and actors, the lecture will explore the question of what role civil society plays for democracy in Eastern Europe.
The event is a co-operation between the Institute for European Studies and History at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
