Pandemic and populism. What has Corona done to politics and society?
Location: TIETZ, event hall, 3rd floor
Participation: free of charge
Registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2210131
We seem to be living in times of permanent crisis. Financial and euro crisis, migration and refugee crisis, corona pandemic and most recently the war in Ukraine: society seems to be in a permanent state of emergency. This is changing the society in which we live and the politics with which we govern ourselves: polarisation tendencies in society are growing into divisions, the party system is experiencing new formations and political actors are trying out new formats of exchange with society. Change and adaptation are part of everyday life in liberal-democratic societies. However, questions remain: How much crisis pressure can the political system withstand? How much longer can it last? Which parties and political actors have benefited from the coronavirus pandemic and which have not?
Dr Steven Schäller researches populism and protest movements at the Mercator Forum Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) at the Technical University of Dresden. He would like to discuss these questions with the participants at this event.
This event is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.

Freedom of the press is one of the highest goods of democracy, regulated in Germany in Article 5 of the Basic Law. Every year, 'Reporters Without Borders' publishes a worldwide ranking of press freedom. Germany dropped three places in 2021 - mainly due to the increasing violence against journalists in recent years. Physical violence is becoming more frequent at demonstrations, among other things. But verbal attacks against media professionals are also becoming more frequent and more severe. In this event, we will examine the causes of this development, the specific and verifiable incidents, the role of the police and the extent to which the willingness to use violence against media professionals is becoming a challenge to our democracy.
The evening's speaker will be Ine Dippmann, deputy studio manager at MDR in Leipzig and chairwoman of the German Journalists' Association of Saxony. After her presentation, there will be an opportunity to talk to each other.
This event is sponsored by the Saxon State Media Authority (SLM).

The modern age courts the intellect as a decision-making authority independent of faith and feelings. Learning and knowledge are the tools of choice, whereas faith seems to be outdated. But is it really sensible to rely on the intellect alone? Doesn't faith move mountains? Isn't confusing knowledge with wisdom the cause of many of our problems today? We want to take a Buddhist look at the relationship between faith and understanding and encounter enlightenment, which transcends human understanding and yet is not irrational. We will learn that trust in Buddha's teachings enables intuitive access to the deepest layers of our own wisdom and can serve as a basis for intellectual analyses.

In the summer of 1944, a barrack camp was set up near Penig as a subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp. From January to April 1945, it was used to house 703 female forced labourers. These women were Hungarian Jewish women who were deported from Budapest to Penig via the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp. Here they had to perform forced labour for a branch factory of Junkers-Werke Dessau. After the majority of the women were driven on a death march in April 1945, American troops discovered the camp and liberated the women who had been left behind.
Since 2015, the Penig citizens' initiative "Gesicht zeigen" has been researching the history of the camp and keeping the memory of the women concerned alive - including on information boards and with the publication of a brochure.
This evening will not only present the history of the camp, but also the initiative's associated active remembrance work.
This event is a contribution to the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The day of remembrance takes place annually on 27 January.
