Especially in a time full of upheaval and change, many people are looking for support and orientation in esoteric models of explaining the world, in which horoscopes reveal what their future will bring and the spiritual healer becomes a guiding figure. The fact is that the esoteric market is booming. But is the belief in invisible forces that are supposed to steer our lives in the right direction just a harmless craze? Or does the esoteric trend also harbour more socially dangerous risks than might appear at first glance?
The bestselling authors Pia Lamberty and Katharina Nocun explain in their new book "Gefährlicher Glaube. Die radikale Gedankenwelt der Esoterik", the bestselling authors Pia Lamberty and Katharina Nocun clarify these questions. Katharina Nocun will present the most important findings in an online lecture this evening and invites you to join in the discussion.
The event is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. It is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.

Actively and democratically helping to shape the administration of justice - this is possible in Germany: for example as an honorary judge for criminal cases - i.e. as a lay judge at the local and regional courts.
We are looking for interested citizens who would like to take on this important task for the new term of office for lay judges from 2024 to 2028. The information event will provide practical information about the requirements, conditions and basic principles. Anyone interested should definitely make a note of this date.
The event is a co-operation between the non-profit Association of Honorary Judges of Central Germany and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Workshop: Countering prejudice and conspiracy narratives effectively

Conspiracy narratives are always topical and have a long history. In a theoretical input, the workshop describes the functions they serve and the dangers they harbour. Participants will discuss argumentation techniques and strategies for their own everyday professional and private lives.

A short video, a quick message - social media is becoming more diverse over time and is being used by more and more children and young people. Developers reach this target group with a targeted approach and presentation and sometimes tempt them into carefree use. Parents quickly lose track of what is on offer. What data is my child disclosing and who is he or she texting with all the time? These and other questions naturally concern parents and will be answered at the event. In addition, advice and tips on data protection settings will help to protect children and young people from data misuse by third parties in the best possible way.

Can you measure democracy?

We are concerned about democracy and would therefore like to measure the state of democracy worldwide and as objectively as possible. But how do you measure democracy? Is it even possible to measure what philosophy calls an "essentially contested concept"? There are already various attempts to quantify the concept of democracy.
This talk will give a brief account of these concepts and ask what they tell us about democracy itself and about our understanding of democracy.
The speaker, Philip Manow, teaches political science at the University of Bremen. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
The event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the adult education centres in Chemnitz, Esslingen district and SüdOst in Munich district.
