1713: Times of crisis in Saxony. Hans Carl von Carlowitz, the chief mining administrator, is preoccupied with the shortage of timber. He summarises his findings collected over the years in his book "Sylvicultura oeconomica".
2021: Times of crisis in Saxony. Almost three hundred years after the work was published, the topic of sustainability is more relevant than ever. And it encompasses social, economic and ecological issues on an equal footing.
We invite you to a lecture on time, history, ecology, climate and people. Forestry expert Ullrich Göthel from the Grüna forest district will explain how everything is connected.
The event is a co-operation between the Carlowitz-Gesellschaft e. V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Events for Safer Internet Day 2022

Participation: free of charge
The international Safer Internet Day was initiated to increase the safety of children and young people online. The adult education centre is also taking part in the global day of action in 2022 - with two online events from the "trau.schau.wem?" media literacy project.
From 5 p.m. , parents and educators will receive practical tips on youth protection and parental controls online. They will learn which devices are suitable for children and how they can be configured - including with different access levels for children and parents. Speaker Jens Günther will also raise awareness of when children are fit for the Internet and how to balance trust and control.
The second event from 7 p.m. is dedicated to the topic of "Influencers as opinion leaders". Speaker Jenny Stapel will give an insight into how influencers influence value orientations, opinions and purchasing decisions. Participants will also learn how influencers establish relationships with their followers and what role they can play in society.
Both events are sponsored by the Saxon State Media Authority (SLM).

vhs@home: Between disparagement and idealisation: "The Barbarians" in the past and present

Even in ancient times, people devalued others as barbarians in order to valorise themselves. The barbarian was usually the negative counterpart to the civilised and cultured Hellenes or Romans. In their eyes, the so-called barbarians were everything that they themselves were not in their own perception: wild, cruel, lawless, devious, immoderate, libidinous, stupid, etc. Only in a few cases was the barbarian used as a foil for idealisations, for example to mark decadent tendencies in their own society. These attributions are more reminiscent of the image of the "noble savage", which was also to be found later in the era of slavery and colonialism.
Even today, these mechanisms still function in the attribution of identities of self and other.
The ancient historian Mischa Meier and the writer Durs Grünbein will discuss in a talk at Villa Vigoni how concepts of identity emerged historically, what they were used for and how these concepts were continued. Who are the barbarians today and who determines this and what role do language and poetry play in this?
Mischa Meier is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Tübingen. His "History of the Migration of Peoples" was awarded the WISSEN! Non-Fiction Prize.
Durs Grünbein is an award-winning poet and essayist. He is Professor of Poetics at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and has translated Latin and Greek classics into German.
The event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Erding and SüdOst Adult Education Centres in the district of Munich.
