Western music was extremely popular among the GDR population - which made it all the more of a thorn in the side of the SED leadership. Many files document everything the GDR state security did to monitor musicians and fans. Even Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones came under the Stasi's scrutiny during a transit trip through the GDR.
Thuringian journalist Thomas Purschke describes many of these incidents and the significance of Western music for people in the GDR in a multimedia lecture. Afterwards, the speaker will be available for a discussion with the audience.
The event is a co-operation with the Institute of Political Science at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e. V. and is part of the joint series "Jugendopposition und Devianz in der späten DDR".

When it was built in the middle of the 19th century, the Alte Aktienspinnerei Chemnitz was the largest cotton mill in Saxony and an important place in Saxony's industrial history.
Since then, the building has not only been used as a spinning mill, but also in a variety of other ways. Since 2020, it has housed the central library and archive of Chemnitz University of Technology.
The building has not only made a lasting impression on the outside since its renovation (2014 to 2020). Inside, too, an imposing ensemble has opened up as a place of learning and research, but also of communication and encounters.
This guided tour invites you to get to know the building, its history and its current use.

The various life stories of the Buddha pose a challenge for Buddhists and Buddhism researchers when it comes to how they view all the rich material. This lecture attempts to re-conceptualise "Buddha as a historical person" and to reconcile his intellectual and religious worldview with the many posthumous legends. It reconstructs a biography that is of course virtual, but at the same time realistic.
Prof Dr Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer held the Chair of East Asian Culture and Linguistics at the University of Munich from 1981 to 1993, before becoming Director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel until 2015. He is now Director of the China Centre Tübingen.
The event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the adult education centres in Chemnitz, Esslingen and SüdOst in the district of Munich.

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites you to a climate meeting once a month under the motto "Sustainability connects". The regulars' table format provides a framework for all Chemnitz residents who want to learn more about climate protection and sustainability and stay up to date. The aim of the regulars' table is to build a climate-conscious community in Chemnitz that offers the opportunity for networking, regular dialogue and discussion of current issues affecting Chemnitz and the region. Together, ways are to be found to commit to a climate-friendly Chemnitz.
The event is a cooperation between the Consumer Protection Centre Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. It is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.
