One of the main causes of climate change is mankind. We are talking about the phenomenon of anthropogenic climate change. There is still time to act, but the window of opportunity available to us is closing. Some voices are calling for action: Only a global agreement supported by the entire international community can stop global warming. Above all, political decision-makers must recognise that instruments such as carbon pricing or emissions trading are effective, fair measures from which all countries can benefit. Is the EU Green Deal a step in the right direction?

Prof Ottmar Edenhofer will be discussing all these questions on this evening. He is Director and Chief Economist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and is one of the most cited scientists in the world. As an expert in environmental economics, he advises the OECD and the United Nations, among others.

This event is part of the series "vhs.wissen live - the digital science programme" as a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Erding and SüdOst Adult Education Centres in the district of Munich.

A commented reading with Germanist and art teacher Dr Ulrike Uhlig, who approaches the novel "The King David Report" from an unusual angle. The focus is not on the well-known representatives of power such as the kings Solomon and David or the historian Ethan, but on the strong female figures such as Ethan's wife Esther, his lover Lilith, the queen mother Bathsheba or Princess Michal. Biographical background information on the genesis of the novel rounds off the reading.

This event is a co-operation between the International Stefan Heym Society and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Into the rubbish bin - and then?

We throw things in the bin every day: hoover bags, kitchen waste, paper, glass, packaging and much more. But what actually happens to the different types of waste? Where is it taken and how is it disposed of? What is recovered and how is it recycled?

In the city of Chemnitz, the ASR is the city's own waste management company and is responsible for waste disposal, a daily service for around 130,000 households.

On this evening, you will receive answers to all your questions about waste disposal in Chemnitz from the ASR's waste counselling service. The event is part of the "Living Consciously" series at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

"German-speaking" whiskies

Whisky from Germany and neighbouring German-speaking countries is becoming more and more interesting - and has already become a real trend. There are now more than three hundred distillers in Germany who are trying their hand at whisky. Some of the results are not only interesting, but also really tasty. It's time to take a closer look at some of the new releases and some of the "tried and tested" examples, even if they are unfortunately comparatively expensive.

The resilient society

This presentation will introduce the concept of resilience as a guiding principle for our post-COVID society. The proposal is that instead of focusing on cost minimisation and narrow efficiency gains, we should shift our thinking to a resilient society that is able to recover from shocks. The concept of resilience, which is about avoiding pitfalls and turning points, is therefore different from traditional risk management.

The lecture will outline how this concept can be applied to public health and macroeconomics and how it can affect innovation, debt or economic inequality. The speaker, Markus Brunnermeier, is Professor of Economics at Princeton University in New Jersey (USA) and Director of the Bendheim Centre for Finance. His widely discussed book "The Resilient Society" was published by Aufbau-Verlag Berlin in August 2021.

China's Great Upheaval: Social Conflicts and Rise in the World System

The current rise of the People's Republic of China is leading to a reorganisation of the global balance of power. Class and gender relations have also changed fundamentally within the country as a result of economic development. Every year, millions of peasants lose their land and new classes of free wage labourers and capitalists emerge. Strikes, rural unrest and ethnic conflicts are the result.

In his lecture, the evening's speaker, Felix Wemheuer, will explain China's great transformation in the context of global trends of decolonisation, the Cold War and the triumph of neoliberal capitalism. Overcoming backwardness and catching up with the West economically was and is a central goal of the Chinese leadership. The question of whether China is fundamentally changing the world system or is itself rising to become a new capitalist centre will be examined. And the character of today's Chinese society will be discussed.

Felix Wemheuer is Professor of Modern China Studies at the University of Cologne. He was previously a visiting scholar at Harvard University and studied "History of the CCP" at the People's University in Beijing.

Half-truths and false information are hidden in both traditional media and social networks. Many users are unsure which offers they can trust. This makes it all the more important to recognise well-researched news and use it as a basis for forming an opinion.

In the workshop series "Workshop Journalism - Behind the Scenes at SACHSEN Fernsehen", experienced editors provide insights into their everyday work and show how topics are prepared, sources used and content checked for truth. They guide the participants in producing their own programmes with a microphone and camera.

The next workshop will take place on 14 December from 5 p.m. on the topic of cross-media work with text, images, sound and video.

Schuessler salts for home use

Therapy with Schuessler salts is an alternative healing method developed by Dr Schuessler based on homeopathy. The use and mode of action of Schuessler salts are based on the findings of empirical medicine; as with homeopathy, there is no scientific proof of their effectiveness. However, just like homeopathy, Schuessler salts are becoming increasingly popular. As a gentle aid for minor ailments, they are increasingly becoming part of the medicine cabinet.

The art of fermentation - the healthy way to preserve food

Get to know the ancient, traditional techniques of fermentation and give them a modern twist. Fermentation offers a way of preserving healthy food efficiently and naturally, and even refining it and enriching it with nutrients.

The course provides a theoretical overview of fermentation and demonstrates the practical implementation. A variety of recipes will also be provided so that you can get creative in the kitchen and soon be fermenting like a pro.

The origin of cooperation in humans

Cooperation is a cornerstone of human behaviour: helpfulness and collaboration are essential for successful coexistence. But what is the origin of this behaviour? Are we egoists by nature who first have to be taught altruism? Where do team spirit and our sense of justice come from?

This lecture by Felix Warneken presents the latest findings from psychological research with children and provides insights into the surprisingly early development of cooperative behaviour even in infancy. Comparative studies also suggest that chimpanzees also have some co-operative skills that were previously considered uniquely human. Using concrete examples from the latest research, this lecture will show the origins and influencing factors for the development of cooperative behaviour in humans.

Felix Warneken is a psychologist and professor at the University of Michigan. Previously, he was a professor at Harvard University and from 2007 to 2009 a research associate of Michael Tomasello at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.
