Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20, course room 4.07
Fee: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2310151
When refugees come to Germany, they are laden with the individual stories of their lives, their escape routes and the hardships they have endured on the way. Women and girls in particular are often subjected to sexual violence and forced into prostitution.
The Plauen-based organisation KARO e. V., which has a branch in the Czech Republic, is involved in cross-border outreach work in various Czech border regions, in parts of Saxony and Thuringia and in some regions in Bavaria. The staff there look after girls and women who have ended up in street prostitution and brothel-like establishments in order to empower them and encourage them to leave their situation. At the KARO e.V. shelter, those affected are then given the necessary security and help to take steps towards a new life.
On this evening, the managing director of KARO e. V. will present what human trafficking and forced prostitution mean in the Saxon border region and the difficulties encountered by the organisation's actors.
The event is taking place as part of the exhibition "Camp of the Forgotten - Pictures from Italy's largest refugee camp in Apulia". It can be seen from 7 November to 20 December on the 4th floor of Tietz.
Tuesday, 5 December, 4.30 to 8.15 pm
Workshop: Argumentation and action training against inhuman attitudes
Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20, course room 4.62
Fee: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2310160
Group-focused misanthropy is not a marginalised phenomenon, but is widespread in our society, which does not make it easy to deal with. Political disinterest, populist influence, a lack of information and existing resentment give rise to discrimination with concrete consequences for those affected. It is important to speak out and courageously stand up for human rights. But what exactly are inhumane attitudes? When am I required to react? And how can I take action? The answers to these questions are the focus of the argumentation and action training. The aim of the workshop is to recognise inhuman attitudes at an early stage, to refute them with arguments and to be able to effectively counter discriminatory activities. Theoretical digressions on specific issues, but above all a joint exchange of views and approaches will help.
The event is a cooperation between the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and Courage - Werkstatt für demokratische Bildungsarbeit e. V., the Saxonian sponsor of the nationwide Network for Democracy and Courage (NDC).
Tuesday, 5 December, 7 to 8.30 pm

Fast Fashion: Why should I care?
Location: University Library, Room 211, Straße der Nationen 33
Fee: free of charge, registration link: www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2331002
The workshop takes you on a journey to the countries where textiles are produced and opens up a view of a globalised textile chain. Dr André Matthes, Head of Textile Sustainability and Digital Education at the Chair of Textile Technologies at Chemnitz University of Technology, will vividly explain the journey our clothes take from the cotton fields to our wardrobes. A T-shirt is worth more than its retail price, the true costs are significantly higher. A T-shirt contains a number of resources whose origin and use often remain unclear. Together with the workshop participants, Matthes takes a critical look behind the scenes of the fashion industry and also discusses our own consumer behaviour. The workshop aims to encourage people to think about a healthy, sustainable and conscious clothing style and facilitate an active dialogue.
