Non-violent communication (NVC) as a special form of shaping interpersonal relationships was developed by Dr Marshall Rosenberg in the early 1970s. This method is now used worldwide for conflict resolution. It makes it possible to establish and maintain a new quality of contact through respectful interaction, especially when difficulties arise. The course provides an introduction to the NVC method. Practical exercise situations offer an initial application - especially in relation to everyday working life and personal experiences. The main contents of the course are
- the basic attitude of non-violent communication and its image of the human being,
- the concept of "need" as the central key to appreciative communication
- the components of the "four steps" as a framework for any communication process,
- sincere self-expression, empathic listening to the opinion of the other person,
- the joy of contributing to peaceful coexistence.

The internet has long since become an everyday companion. Whether on a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone - you can now surf anywhere and at any time. We click away dialogue messages almost as a matter of course and are literally forced to accept so-called cookies.
In a presentation, the Saxony Consumer Centre explains this and makes it clear that cookies have nothing in common with the biscuits we usually consume with tea or coffee. What is behind cookies and what are they used for? What are necessary cookies and what should users be aware of? These and other questions will be answered during the event, which will also give participants a chance to have their say.

"We can do it" - hardly any other phrase has provoked as much hatred and malice as Chancellor Angela Merkel's famous three words. The social divide began in 2015, continued during the coronavirus pandemic with all its restrictive measures and deepened last year with the start of the Ukraine conflict. People no longer listen to each other, shout at each other, insult and threaten each other. You might think that none of this is so bad because it happens online. But far from it: hate messages and comments on the internet can also constitute a criminal offence, as they often make the recipient feel uncomfortable.
Dr Martin Thüne from the Thuringian University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration explains how hate crime is being combated online and why it is increasingly becoming a problem for our free, democratic society.

Shaping the water supply for the future

Our rivers and reservoirs carry little water. It is therefore more important than ever to organise the water supply sustainably. The event will focus on the work of the state dam administration, whose tasks include water supply, water maintenance and flood protection. The dams and their management tasks in Central Saxony and the Erzgebirgskreis district will be presented using the example of the Freiberger Mulde/Zschopau operation. At the same time, an overview will be given of the special requirements for nature and water protection, the preservation of historical facilities as a world cultural heritage site and the complete renovation of the Lichtenberg dam.

Data sets as the raw material of the 21st century? What sounds threatening and a bit like science fiction has long since become reality in the major newspaper editorial offices. Publicly accessible data - known as open data in technical jargon - is becoming increasingly important and is also becoming more and more important for media companies. At the same time, there is an infinite amount of information circulating on the Internet, the veracity of which is becoming increasingly difficult to verify due to the sheer volume.
Ronny Schilder, data journalist at Freie Presse, will explain how data journalism helps to categorise information correctly, how it works in principle and why it will become increasingly important in the future. During the event, he will provide insights into his daily work and answer questions from participants.

In portrait: Three women from Chemnitz write history

With the project "frauenorte sachsen", the Landesfrauenrat Sachsen e. V. has been honouring Saxony's women's history on information boards since 2016. At the places where women once lived and/or worked, short biographies commemorate the special achievements of women in all areas of society. The project is accompanied by a travelling exhibition that shows all the women's sites that have been inaugurated so far on exhibition boards.
Three of these plaques for exceptional women can also be found in Chemnitz. These include Ernestine Minna Simon (1845-unknown), textile worker and strike leader in the former Chemnitz stock spinning mill, Marie Luise Pleißner (1891-1983), teacher, peace activist and women's rights campaigner, and Marianne Brandt (1893-1983), photographer and designer.
In this event, Regina Doerffel, Stephan Luther and Dr Jörg Feldkamp will present new portraits of the three Chemnitz women and their special achievements.
From 3 to 29 April 2023, the travelling exhibition "frauenorte sachsen" will be on display at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre on the 4th floor of the TIETZ.
The exhibition and the event are a cooperation between the Landesfrauenrat Sachsen e. V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre - supported by the Chemnitz University of Technology archive.

Who's that chirping? How computers learn to recognise birds by their song

Recognising bird calls with a smartphone is possible with the "BirdNET" app. But how exactly does this recognition work? What role does artificial intelligence play? The course explores the question of how computers can learn to recognise birds by their song. Interested parties will also learn how everyone can automatically contribute to species recognition by using the app. Their skills will be put to the test in the Crimmitschau forest.

Mindfulness in the forest

In the forest, it is often easier to calm down and recharge your batteries, as nature has a relaxing and decelerating effect on body and mind. Various mindfulness exercises and Qi Gong enhance these effects during the course. In addition to the exercises, the course provides extensive and fundamental background knowledge so that you can also benefit from it afterwards.

Workshop: Ecology from the right. Right-wing extremist ideologies in nature and environmental protection

Time and again, democratic actors in nature conservation, environmental protection and (ecological) agriculture are confronted with attempts at appropriation and infiltration from the right. What motives do extreme right-wingers have for getting involved in these areas? What goals are they pursuing? The workshop sensitises participants to the historical and current links between German nature conservation and environmental protection and extreme right-wing ideologies. The workshop will introduce anti-democratic and inhumane ideologies and thought patterns. Based on this, possible options for prevention and intervention can be developed.

Waste or no waste: on the road to zero waste

Chemnitz, Berlin and many other cities and municipalities are making their way towards zero waste - with many projects and initiatives. What impact does our consumption have on the global volume of waste and on people and the environment in the Global South? What can we do as individuals to avoid waste? What can and should policy-makers in Germany do? We will discuss these questions from a scientific perspective and with people from current projects.
Our guests are Dr Stefan Ziegler from WWF, who will report on a model project to reduce plastic waste in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Julius Neu, who not only works for INKOTA e.V. but is also a One World Promoter for Climate and Resource Justice, will explore the question of where the (metallic) raw materials we consume originate. What are the consequences of their extraction for people, the environment and the climate in the countries of the Global South?
In addition, viewers can expect contributions from Tallinn, the European Green Capital 2021, an adult education centre from the Swedish capital Stockholm and other interesting guests who will present their projects and ideas on waste avoidance.
The series of events takes place as part of the Development-Related Education in Germany (EBD) programme of ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH and in cooperation with the German Adult Education Association (DVV). The event is organised by the organisers in cooperation with the Berlin adult education centres and ALEX Offener Kanal Berlin.

Promoting biodiversity in the city: What can every property owner do?

Insects, birds, reptiles and amphibians are suffering from the constant loss of habitat and climate change. This phenomenon is also noticeable here in Chemnitz. How can we counteract this trend? The lecture aims to show property owners, gardening associations, housing co-operatives and companies how we can do more together to preserve biodiversity in the city and which measures really help.

Film and discussion: "Hurray! It's a girl!" 25 biographical sketches of women from Chemnitz

25 women, 25 biographies - what do they have in common? Their lives are connected to the history of the city of Chemnitz in very different ways.
Beate Kunath's documentary film shows exactly how. It presents a mosaic of interviews, historical photos and materials and thus introduces the women in a dignified and sensitive way, bringing their respective lives and thoughts to life and drawing a picture of their social environment.
The director and filmmaker Beate Kunath, who was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt and now lives in Berlin, has succeeded in making a film entitled "Hurra! It's a girl!" (D 2018/145min) is an impressive film.
Almost five years after the film's premiere in Chemnitz in August 2018, we are showing it again and inviting you to a discussion.

Art project: "The Art of Inclusion"
Location: TIETZ, adult education centre, gallery, 5th floor
The artist, author, speaker and autism counsellor Gee Vero presents her project "The Art of Inclusion" (AoI). As part of this project, the artist has been sending an unfinished portrait to personalities from politics, sport, science or culture since 2010. It usually consists of just one half of a face, drawn with a few black lines on watercolour paper. Gee Vero asks the people she writes to complete the picture according to their own ideas. In this way, two people who do not know each other personally create an individual work of art. Among the personalities who have worked with Gee Vero are Angela Merkel, Udo Lindenberg and Jogi Löw. From 2012, the artist had a very special collaboration with the illustrator and "Käpt'n Sharky" creator Silvio Neuendorf. A whole series of wonderful "tandem pictures" were created with him. Gee Vero's fascinating works have already been exhibited at numerous venues in Germany.
The exhibition is part of the Autism Theme Week from 38 March to 2 April 2023 in Chemnitz.
