Mountains of rubbish speak against disposable nappies. So why not switch to cotton nappies? Various cotton nappy systems will be presented in this course. A price comparison, a look at environmental costs and practical demonstrations will make it clear that there are a number of arguments in favour of ecological nappy changing. Nappy changing exercises on dolls will show that the handling is not as complicated as is often assumed. Let us inform you comprehensively!

From the existence of the world to the reality of life

Almost all of us are currently experiencing an increasingly hectic pace of life and an ever-increasing number of choices. There are hardly any self-evident things or taboos left. This makes living together much more difficult. What was certain yesterday is being questioned today and may no longer apply tomorrow. No one knows where this will lead, but most of us suspect that we may be in the midst of a major shift in consciousness of historic proportions. This is not only frightening, it is also leading to a crisis.
What's more, we have enough doomsday prophets. This is why the philosopher Johannes Soukup is trying to see this crisis as an opportunity that gives us the courage and strength to think for ourselves. Using (post)philosophical means and renouncing all creeds in the broadest sense, he points out traditional mistakes and hopefully constructive alternatives.
Prof. Dr Johannes Soukup, studied theoretical physics, philosophy after 1989 and headed a private university. He has been intensively involved with ideological and religious issues for 35 years. He is guided by curiosity and the unconditional will to understand and to be truthful. This evening invites you to reflect and enter into dialogue with him.

Cybercrime and identity theft - how secure is my data?

It's a thought that frightens us all: strangers stealing personal data on the Internet, ordering goods to other people's addresses or even emptying bank accounts. Nevertheless, for most of us, life without the Internet and its conveniences is no longer imaginable and hardly practicable.
How do we deal with this dilemma? What should we pay attention to? How do criminals get hold of our data in the first place? How can we protect ourselves? And what can we do if something has already happened? We will explore these exciting questions together in the lecture.

Web 2.0 offers a multitude of opportunities for communication and exchange and it is part of the reality of life for the "head-down generation" to live out and try out a large part of their needs online. Media use is increasing rapidly and even primary school children are entering the world of WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat and the like at an ever earlier age. In order to guide children and young people well in this world and to be a contact person, it is important to be aware of the dangers and to strengthen your own behavioural and media skills.
The aim of the information event for parents is to provide information on dangers such as (unwanted) contact with pornographic images, cybergrooming and the dangers of sexting and to discuss individual options for action. To this end, the background, access and frequency will be examined in more detail.

Global goals for sustainable development implemented locally: What is the state of play in Chemnitz?

The world is facing many challenges: The fight against hunger and poverty, for affordable and clean energy, climate protection, sustainable cities and fair globalisation. In order to find answers to the pressing issues of our time, the United Nations agreed on a total of 17 global goals for sustainable development with the "Agenda 2030".
Such political goals often seem abstract and far removed from our everyday lives. But the agenda is aimed at all areas of individual and public life. Global challenges have a very concrete impact on local people. At the same time, local action has a concrete impact on global developments.
Together with you, we are focussing on Chemnitz. At this event, we want to discuss with you and with stakeholders from politics and administration, civil society and business: Why are the Sustainable Development Goals relevant to us all and what is happening in our city to achieve them?
This event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "Controversial on Site" project.

Behind the world stage: Hermann Budzislawski and the 20th century

Hardly any other left-wing intellectual survived more regime changes and was as effective in so many different ways as Hermann Budzislawski, whether as a successor to Carl von Ossietzky and Kurt Tucholsky as head of the "Weltbühne" after 1933, as a colleague of Dorothy Thompson in the USA or as a formative figure in socialist journalism in the GDR. First the Nazis chased him through half of Europe, then the self-appointed homeland protectors of the "Committee for Un-American Activities", and finally the Stalinists of the SED Party Control Commission. Budzislawski managed with astonishing agility not only to survive all existential threats, but also to gain new influence time and again.
The lecture by the historian Prof Daniel Siemens, who teaches at Newcastle University in the UK, presents this exciting transnational biography. He explores the scope for freedom of socialist politics in exile and in the GDR and asks about the price of political adaptation and resistance. At the same time, he creates a complex panorama of the 20th century. The lecture is based on Daniel Siemens' book published in March 2022 "Hinter der Weltbühne. Hermann Budzislawski and the 20th century".
This event is a cooperation between the Chair of Political Theory and History of Ideas at the Institute of Political Science at Chemnitz University of Technology, the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Capital of Culture 2025: Chemnitz city culture workshop

The open workshop is the right place for anyone who would like to find out about topics such as urban culture and urban development or exchange thoughts and ideas in a small setting together with experts. We meet at least three times in a relaxed atmosphere to exchange ideas and discuss. One or two contributions to the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 could also emerge here.

Monuments and water

The guided tour with monument conservator Bettina Schülke sheds light on cultural monuments and urban development along the Chemnitz, continuing on to the castle ponds. There will be information on the history of the buildings, refurbishment and utilisation as well as current plans, also in the context of the Capital of Culture 2025.

Theodor Norbert Kellerbauer: The Chemnitz professor of the Alps

Theodor Norbert Kellerbauer (1839 to 1918) from Chemnitz, who is largely unknown today, was an extraordinary and multifaceted personality. He was not only a professor and an innovative expert in firefighting, recognised throughout Europe, but was also a mountaineer, singer and city councillor in Chemnitz. Born in 1839 in Ering, Bavaria, he was educated in Munich, where he later studied in Freiberg and Karlsruhe. Kellerbauer worked for more than 45 years as a teacher of mechanical engineering subjects at the state technical colleges in Chemnitz. The subject of firefighting was added to the curriculum in 1877 on his initiative. In 1902 and 1909, he became an honorary member of the Austrian and Italian fire brigade associations. Kellerbauer was also an active mountaineer and for many years from 1883 was chairman of the Chemnitz section of the German Alpine Club, which he played a key role in shaping. Kellerbauer was also politically active: in the Liberal Association, later in the liberal Volksverein and from 1910 in the Progressive People's Party. In addition to all his functions, he was also active as a city councillor in Chemnitz. After suffering severe personal strokes of fate, he died in a mental hospital in January 1918.
On this evening, details of Theodor Norbert Kellerbauer's varied and interesting life will be presented by two people who have spent a long time researching him: Stephan Luther, Head of Chemnitz University Archives, and Dr Frank Tröger from the Chemnitz section of the German Alpine Club.

Headaches - a widespread disease

Around half of the German population suffers from headaches, and more than eight million people in Germany are plagued by migraines. What types of headaches are there, what are the known causes and what treatment methods are available? In this course, you will learn about the influence of lifestyle and how you can achieve relief with concepts and methods of holistic medicine. The possibilities and limitations of acupressure for acute and chronic pain will be presented and evaluated.

Food for the rubbish - avoiding food waste

Throwing away food that can actually still be eaten is an important issue. The aim is to avoid food waste. But what is still edible? And what needs to be thrown away? True to the motto "too good for the bin", the course provides information on topics such as shelf life, hygiene, storage and waste avoidance. Ask your questions!
The event is a cooperation between the Saxony Consumer Advice Centre and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Modernist buildings on the Kaßberg

At the end of the 1920s, three buildings in the New Objectivity style for the well-to-do middle classes were built in Hoffmannstraße according to plans by architects Max W. Feistel and Dr Wilhelm Sievers. Extensively restored a few years ago, the three architectural monuments now shine in new splendour. The detached Haubold House (popularly known as the "America House") occupies a special position.

The Cleaners - how can hate be banned from social networks?

Hate and hate speech rule the net. Despite strict rules, content that glorifies violence or is inhumane can still be found on social media. How and by whom exactly is this content filtered out and deleted? How is it ensured that there is no censorship and that free speech is preserved?
This event will focus on the documentary film "The Cleaners" (2018, directed by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck). The film focuses on the stressful work of thousands of external employees who work as "cleaners" for YouTube and Facebook, among others. They scrutinise content every second and decide whether to publish or delete it.
Following the film, there will be an opportunity to reflect on and classify the impressions together in a discussion.
