A journey through time to the amber forest of Central Europe

What did the primeval forests of Central Europe look like 40 to 50 million years ago? Rich fossil finds from the former open-cast lignite mines of Central Germany provide an answer to this question. These include, above all, inclusions of various organisms in Saxon amber as well as almost completely preserved prehistoric horses and other vertebrates from the Geiseltal near Merseburg.
The lecture will provide background information and illustrate unique snapshots from that time using the latest photographic technology.

In his film "Die Unbeugamen 2 - Guten Morgen, ihr Schönen", director Torsten Körner takes a look at the eastern side of the Iron Curtain and paints a lively portrait of East German women.
A group portrait of East German women from the most diverse areas of society in the GDR. 15 self-confident women tell how patriarchy still ruled even in the land of state-ordered equality, creating a powerful kaleidoscope of gender relations in the workers' and farmers' state. The film offers a captivating stage for the impressive life achievements of East German women and their fight for equal opportunities.

A notorious shopping centre for drugs, a fake news slinger and hate machine: Telegram is a mixture of Facebook, Whatsapp and the darknet. The messenger is thought to have more than one billion users and many fans. However, it also has many opponents. The fact that it does not cooperate with the authorities at all or only reluctantly is a major point of criticism. The messenger is used by militant Nazis, right-wing influencers and terror groups alike. But human rights and climate activists also use the service. Telegram is an indispensable tool for civil rights activists and opposition activists in autocratic systems around the world - which is why anti-democratic governments often censor Telegram.
In his lecture, Stefan Mey sheds light on these aspects and takes a look behind the scenes: What do the majority and power structures at Telegram look like and how is the messenger financed? How anonymous and independent is Telegram really? And how can the messenger be used sensibly despite all the problems?
Stefan Mey studied sociology and media studies and works as a freelance technology journalist and author. He has written a non-fiction book about the darknet ("Darknet: Waffen, Drogen, Whistleblower") and about the non-commercial digital world ("Der Kampf um das Internet").
This event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "Controversial on Site" project.

Escape from the GDR via the Baltic Sea, 1961 - 1989

Several thousand GDR citizens attempted to cross the inner-German border via the Baltic Sea. Sometimes better, sometimes worse prepared, often equipped with the courage of desperation, they set off. On a rubber dinghy, an air mattress or a surfboard. Some managed to escape, others were caught and arrested when they tried to escape, if they didn't drown in the waters of the Baltic Sea.
The lecture is dedicated to this special and hitherto little-researched topic of GDR history. Individual fates will be presented based on selected escape stories, but a broad overview of escape routes and escape experiences across the Baltic Sea between 1961 and 1989 will also be given.
The event is a co-operation between the Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e. V., the Institute of Political Science at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. It is part of a series on escape stories from the GDR.

Synthetic fuels made in Freiberg. Research into e-fuels

E-fuels are generally understood to be synthetic fuels that are produced from water and carbon dioxide using electricity. The discussion centres on whether and in what way they are suitable as a replacement for conventional fuels - also in comparison to purely electric drives. In a demonstration plant in Freiberg, Saxony, e-fuels are produced from biogenic or renewable methanol. This is the result of a collaboration between science and industry in the project "Demonstrating a Circular Carbon Economy in Transport along the Value Chain" (DeCarTrans).
The lecture presents the technology and the development of e-fuels as well as the project in Freiberg. Prof Dr Martin Gräbner, holder of the Chair of Energy Process Engineering at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, would like to use this evening to provide information about the development of e-fuels and the discussion about their potential applications and to start a dialogue.

There is a lot of ignorance, uncertainty and misinformation about organ donation. But everyone is called upon to make a very personal decision: organ donation - yes or no?
This event provides information about the requirements and procedures for organ donation. Among other things, the following topics will be discussed:
- Legal basis of organ donation
- Brain death: What exactly does this mean and how is brain death determined?
- Who decides whether to approve or reject an organ donation?
- Who does what on the way to organ donation?
- Are age and previous illnesses important for organ donation?
After the lecture, there will be time to answer your questions about organ donation.
The speaker, Dr Gunnar Richter, is Head of the Transplantation Officer Unit and works in the Department of Neurology at Chemnitz Hospital.

The roots of yoga

This course invites you to look at the origins of the millennia-old practice of yoga in order to develop a deeper understanding of the teachings, texts and spiritual traditions that characterise yoga. Experienced yoga teacher Robina Günkel, who grew up in India and completed her yoga training there, will pass on her knowledge of the historical and philosophical foundations of yoga. The focus will also be on how the essence of yoga can become a lifestyle beyond practising the postures.
Whether you practise or teach yoga, this course will provide valuable inspiration to deepen your own connection to yoga. In addition to the lecture, there will also be time for discussion.
