Accident at the Walter-Ranft-Straße daycare centre
This morning there was a heavy smoke development in the basement of the Walter-Ranft-Straße day care centre. The cause was a smouldering fire on a cable bridge in the building's utility room.
The daycare centre management informed the fire brigade as soon as they noticed the smoke (9.41 am) and arranged for the building to be evacuated. 68 children and 13 teachers had to be evacuated. No one was injured.
When the fire brigade arrived, the children and teachers had already left the building.
The heavily smoky basement area was checked by the fire brigade. The fire was confirmed and had extinguished itself before the fire brigade arrived. The neighbouring areas were checked for smoke spread and secured as a result. The affected area was ventilated with ventilation equipment.
The children and teachers were looked after by the emergency services and temporarily accommodated in a neighbouring construction container. After checking the unaffected rooms in the right-hand part of the daycare centre, the children and teachers could then be temporarily accommodated there.
The daycare centre was de-energised by the "ELT" emergency service of eins energie due to the accident and therefore cannot be used until further notice.
The parents of the children have been informed of the incident by telephone and asked to collect their children. Children who cannot be picked up immediately are still being accommodated and cared for at the Robert-Siewert-Straße 68-70 daycare centre.
Parents have also been asked to look after their children at home on Friday if necessary. If this is not possible, childcare will be offered and secured tomorrow at the daycare centre at Johannis-Dick-Straße 55.
It is not yet possible to say whether the Walter-Ranft-Straße daycare centre will be able to reopen on Monday. We are currently checking whether the main electrical wiring can be installed over the weekend. Parents will then be informed again by the daycare centre management.
