A "synthesis of art and architecture"
The example of Karl-Marx-Stadt
On Wednesday, 14 September 2016 at 6 pm, Dresden architecture and building historian Tanja Scheffler will speak at the City Archive, Aue 16, about the "Synthesis of Art and Architecture" using the example of Karl-Marx-Stadt. The lecture is part of the series "The City Archive presents". Admission is free.
The striking ensemble of buildings comprising the Stadthalle and Interhotel is one of the most interesting post-war modernist projects in the newly designed city centre of Karl-Marx-Stadt - even by international standards: It is a striking and multifaceted example of the idea of a "synthesis of art and architecture" that was pursued during the GDR era, in which the modern new buildings were to be upgraded to identity-creating objects through various forms of building-related art, while at the same time having socialist connotations.
In her lecture, Tanja Scheffler sheds light on the multi-layered, phase-by-phase development of building-related art in the GDR - from the "artistic design" of individual prestige buildings to the accentuating design of entire urban spaces. In the lecture, she also shows many important works, from various murals to the sculptural moulded stone walls that still characterise the cityscape today.
