The city of Chemnitz is now making a new graffiti practice area available in Gablenz Public Park: the shipping container on the southern edge of the park. Spraying on the 40-foot container is permitted for practice purposes without prior registration and is expressly encouraged. The facility is aimed at experienced graffiti artists as well as young people who wish to learn the craft.
Bürgerpark, a public green space in the Gablenz district, is situated between Carl-von-Ossietzky-Straße and Hans-Ziegler-Straße, next to the Pappelhain tram stop. The container forms part of the Bürgerpark Gablenz intervention area, which opened in December 2023. The plan is to repaint the shipping container in a single colour on a regular basis to continually create new space for free graffiti practice.
The container in Bürgerpark Gablenz is not the only graffiti practice area in Chemnitz. At www.chemnitz.de/graffiti, anyone interested can find out about other graffiti practice areas in the city – some requiring prior arrangement, others not – as well as view spaces available for commissioned work.
Anyone using the graffiti practice areas agrees to the following terms of use:
- Depictions of anti-constitutional, xenophobic, racist, anti-Semitic or pornographic content will not be tolerated, and
- Users of these areas must ensure they co-exist harmoniously and dispose of empty spray cans.
