A new beginning for the visual arts in Chemnitz after 1945

Lecture evening in the city archive on 18 January, 6 pm

The first lecture evening in 2017 as part of the series "The City Archive presents" will take place on Wednesday, 18 January 2017, 6 pm, in the Chemnitz City Archive building, Aue 16. Admission is free.

The Chemnitz art historian and author Ralf W. Müller will speak on the topic of "Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Martha Schrag and Friedrich Schreiber-Weigand and the new beginning of fine art in Chemnitz after 1945".

Newly discovered letters by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Martha Schrag and Friedrich Schreiber-Weigand allow us to take a closer look at the situation of the three protagonists of Chemnitz art after the end of the Second World War. Quotes from letters illustrate their thoughts on the development of art after the war in a revealing way. New fears are articulated as well as initial successes and failures in the material and spiritual reconstruction of cultural life in Chemnitz. The founding of the "Kulturbund zur Erneuerung Deutschlands", the intensive efforts to rebuild the badly damaged museum building on Theaterplatz in Chemnitz and the ultimately hopeless battle for the "Kunsthütte" association are all touched on.
