A look at the history of the Rosenhof
Information stele inaugurated not far from the fountain
An information stele describing the history of the area in different eras was unveiled at the Rosenhof today. Lord Mayor Sven Schulze welcomed those present: "Today we want to visualise interesting facts about our city. Our guests and certainly many residents are often unaware of how this place has changed. There are hardly any traces of the time before 1945 left today. And the Rosenhof, as we know it today, was one of the first projects to be realised in the city centre after the Second World War."
Mayor Sven Schulze unveiled the stele together with Rosenhof resident Siegfried Hempel, who has lived at Rosenhof from the very beginning, i.e. for 60 years. The chairman of the history association, Dr Jens Beutmann, spoke about the significance of the Rosenhof from a historian's perspective. The programme was organised by the Köhler-Schimmel dance school.
The date for the inauguration of the stele was chosen deliberately. On 8 May 1945, the German Wehrmacht surrendered, marking the end of the Second World War for Europe. 20 years later, on 8 May 1965, the Rosenhof received its name. 5,000 roses from former concentration camps and other areas of extermination in the former Soviet Union were planted here. "The wish was that peace should return to this world and that the horrors of the Second World War should not be forgotten. This concern is more important than ever today, especially in light of the current war in Ukraine," says Lord Mayor Sven Schulze.
About the information steles project:
Since 2018, information offerings have been developed at twelve locations, including the Red Tower, the former city gates and the Karl Marx Monument. The project is being implemented by the Mayor's Department with the support of the Chemnitz History Association, the Chemnitz Tour Guide Association and freelance historians.
Further steles are planned for Schloßberg, Stadthalle and Theaterplatz. There, citizens have the opportunity to sponsor such an information stele.
