A fair start to the day with a fair breakfast
Redeeming the coffee bet: on 12 May, 10 a.m. at the Environmental Centre - Chemnitz has applied to become a Fairtrade Town
On Sunday, 12 May, from 10 a.m., the "Fairtrade Town" steering group invites you to a fair start to the day in the environmental centre, with breakfast in the garden if the weather is good.
After narrowly losing the coffee bet, the bet is now being organised. At a fair breakfast, interested parties can experience the flavour and usefulness of fair products. "With a conscious purchase, we can already support fair trade at breakfast: fair products such as coffee/tea/cocoa, orange juice, milk, butter, bananas, honey, cotton tablecloths improve social, economic and ecological aspects together with the producing smallholder families and employees," say the organisers.
Application to become a Fairtrade Town
The steering group, consisting of representatives from civil society, politics, administration and business, has compiled a thick folder over the last few months to demonstrate the criteria of a Fairtrade Town. With the introductory lines "... the city of Chemnitz assumes responsibility - not only locally and in the present, but also globally and for future generations. In March 2019, Mayor Barbara Ludwig sent the portfolio to the TransFair association, which awards the Fairtrade Town label nationwide, with the words "Strengthening fair trade is one measure in the municipalities' range of options on the way to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals".
The application process showed that, in addition to the city administration, associations, schools, parishes, catering businesses and numerous retail outlets are also committed to fair trade.
In addition to the application folder, the steering group organised a Fairtrade festival in July 2018 and the coffee challenge in September 2018 to send a visible signal to the outside world about fair trade and communicate its commitment to fair production conditions and socially and environmentally friendly production and trading structures.
Following the city council's impetus to apply for the title of Fairtrade Town and the work of the steering group, further measures will follow in order to continue to advocate and raise awareness of conscious and responsible consumption as well as the interrelationships of global trade. All areas of urban society are called upon to work towards sustainable development.

The Fairtrade Town campaign offers the opportunity to set a visible example of municipal values and commitment. Cities play a decisive role in the realisation of global development goals, as it is here that fair trade and sustainable consumption can be put into practice. All municipalities worldwide are therefore called upon to fulfil their social, economic and ecological responsibilities. The Chemnitz city councillors have joined this campaign with a resolution and it is now a matter of bringing the motto "think globally - act locally" to life together with representatives of the administration, business, civil society and the population.
