A childhood in a kiosk

Linda Zervakis reads from "Queen of the Colourful Bag" at TIETZ

Tagesschau speaker Linda Zervakis will be a guest at the TIETZ on 20 April 2016 at 20:15. She will read from her book "Königin der bunten Tüte" (Queen of the Colourful Bag) and talk about her somewhat different childhood: charming, funny, sad and always from real life. Admission costs 12 euros (concessions: 8 euros). Tickets for the reading are available at the TIETZ at the museum box office on the 1st floor or can be reserved by telephone on 0371 488-4366.

Just as Linda Zervakis looks into the nation's living rooms today as a newsreader, she used to look out of her parents' kiosk in Hamburg-Harburg. As Greek immigrants, the Zervakis family didn't have much money. All her children worked in her parents' kiosk: a place that would probably be described as a social hotspot today. Migrants, the unemployed, "people who order herbal schnapps for breakfast", pensioners - a colourful crowd for whom the kiosk was a piece of home.
In her book, Linda Zervakis tells the story of how, against all odds, she made it from the Harburg kiosk to the shop window of the daily news.

Linda Zervakis, 39, was born in Hamburg to Greek parents. After leaving school, she worked as a copywriter at the renowned BBDO agency. She has worked as an editor and newsreader for NDR since 2001. Since May 2013, she has been the ARD newsreader at 8 pm.

"Königin der bunten Tüte" was published by Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag in October 2015.
