A beastly autumn: invitation to a walk in the wildlife park
Observe wild animals up close in Rabenstein - show feedings during the autumn holidays
A visit to the wildlife park is beautiful, educational and exciting at any time of year. But autumn is a particularly special time to discover nature. Just ten minutes by car from Chemnitz Zoo, you can explore this 35-hectare wildlife park after a hike through the Rabenstein Forest.
Only European animal species live here: Eagle owls, buzzards, barn owls, pheasants, forest birds, pine martens, wildcats, Carpathian lynxes, wolves, bison, black, mouflon, fallow deer, roe deer and red deer. In the months of September and October, the deer engage in an acoustic competition that will leave visitors speechless. The top stag stands in the clearing with his head thrown far back on his neck and roars his claim to his female into the cold air. The shortening days trigger the rut of the animals like an internal clock. Their bellowing attracts the females, which the top stag circles incessantly to keep the younger male competitors away. Visitors to the game reserve can watch this spectacle from the observation pulpits without disturbing the animals.
The bison, relatives of the American bison, are also impressive. The species was already extinct in Europe and the last wild populations died out in the 1920s. It was only possible to save them through captive breeding and reintroduce them to Poland and Lithuania. Representatives of a species that has often been the talk of the town in recent times can also be observed better in game reserves than in the wild: Canis lupus - the wolf. While nature lovers rarely get to see these shy animals in the wild, they can observe them in peace and quiet in the wildlife park.
Zoo director Anja Dube cordially invites Chemnitz residents and visitors to the city to take an autumn walk through the beautiful grounds of the wildlife park in Rabenstein and also draws attention to the show feedings taking place every weekday at 11 a.m. during the autumn holidays (22.10. to 02.11.2012).
