96 new trees are being planted along four road sections
It is currently planting season for street trees again. These not only have an important urban design function, but also have a variety of positive effects on people and the environment: trees reduce dust and noise, improve air quality and provide shade in summer. There are currently 23,000 trees on the streets of Chemnitz. Maintaining them, keeping them safe for traffic and - where appropriate - supplementing them is just as much a task for the city as filling in gaps left by felling. In the last planting season, the Parks Department had 263 new trees planted on 13 streets. Now a further 96 trees are waiting to green four sections of road in future.
The specialist centre Garten+STL-Bau GmbH from Hauptmannsgrün has been commissioned with this planting task. The Parks Department estimates the costs for this at around 137,000 euros.
Following appropriate preparatory work and delivery of the trees, the gardening company will start planting at the beginning of November - initially on Beckerstrasse.
From the Treffurthbrücke bridge towards the city centre, 22 new Norway maple trees will be planted. And 16 new oaks will be planted in the city park area towards Parkstrasse. The specialist company will have to extend the existing tree discs or create additional ones for these replacement plantings.
Innere Klosterstraße will also receive a green addition with two copper rock pears, although the multi-stemmed solitary trees will not be planted in the ground here, but in steel planters due to a large number of cables.
On Heinrich-Schütz-Straße from the corner of Würzburger Straße to Yorckstraße, the Parks Department wants to have 34 Norway maples replanted. To do this, the existing tree discs have to be partially extended and new ones created. The construction access roads in front of the future school for the physically disabled will still remain free, but new street trees will also be planted here later.
The Parks Department plans to plant 22 Norway maple trees on Elisenstrasse. Supply lines are currently being renewed here between Straße der Nationen and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, which will continue in the direction of Brühl. Due to this project, trees can only be planted in the ground afterwards.
Felling is necessary in places on three arterial roads (including Beckerstrasse, Heinrich-Schütz-Strasse and Elisenstrasse). The old trees affected pose a danger to pedestrians and traffic due to their poor condition.
On the other hand, trees need to be pruned on Beckerstrasse in the Stadtpark area, with overhanging trees being felled to give street trees more space.
