90 years of handball in Chemnitz/Karl-Marx-Stadt. From TV Gablenz to Motor Schönau to the present day

As part of the "The City Archive presents" series, a lecture on the topic of "90 years of handball in Chemnitz/Karl-Marx-Stadt. From TV Gablenz to Motor Schönau to the present day" by Chemnitz handball historian Walter Müller. Admission is free.
TV Gablenz was the first club to officially play handball in Chemnitz. The first Saxon and German titles were won in the 1920s. In 1929/1930, the Jahnbaude was built on the Jahnkampfbahn next to the Humboldt School. Two more handball clubs were founded, in Schönau in 1925 and in Rottluff in 1927. Motor Schönau even made it into the GDR's top league in 1963 and played matches in what was then West Germany. In the following years, handball in Karl-Marx-Stadt faded into the background. However, Motor Schönau continued to do good work with young players. International games in the ice rink became legendary, for example in 1974, when the World Championship was held in the GDR, and in 1976, when the GDR team won against West Germany but still failed to reach the Olympic Games. Since 1990, handball has been played at the Handballverein, the Handballclub and the SSV Rottluff.
