79 per cent of people in Chemnitz are satisfied with their living situation
Municipal citizen survey 2019 analysed
The final report with the results of the second citizen survey in the city of Chemnitz is now available. After the initial survey results were published in the quick report in March, the final report now available contains more in-depth analyses and observations. For the survey, 6,000 citizens between the ages of 18 and 85 were randomly selected from the population register and asked to complete the attached questionnaire. A total of 2,374 people took part between September and November.
The survey is divided into the following topics: "Life satisfaction and future expectations", "Living conditions and infrastructure in the city", "Education, employment and income situation""Accessibility", "Housing", "Schools and day-care centres", "Mobility", "Safety and order" and "Civic participation and media".

Life satisfaction and expectations for the future
Four out of five Chemnitz residents are (very) satisfied with their own lives. In addition, the majority are positive about their personal future (62 per cent). Only a few consider the economic situation of the city in general to be very poor (12 per cent).
Living conditions and infrastructure in the city
One in two people consider medical care to be one of the biggest problems in Chemnitz. This is particularly often perceived as a problem in the southern districts of the city. While there is a high level of satisfaction with the availability of green spaces and parks as well as housing, the availability of leisure facilities for young people is particularly criticised. With the exception of footpaths, the condition of the transport infrastructure is clearly criticised. Cleanliness is criticised primarily in the Sonnenberg district.
Education, employment and income situation
The average personal net income in Chemnitz is 1,356 euros. The average net household income is 2,625 euros. At 1,773 euros, the net equivalent income is close to the German average.
Accessibility
One in five people in Chemnitz feel that their activities are significantly restricted by long-term illnesses, disabilities or infirmities. The biggest problems in terms of accessibility are seen as the usability of local public transport and the accessibility of pavements.
Housing
With 69 per cent of the population surveyed, rented accommodation is the most common type of housing. In areas close to the city centre, the proportion of owner-occupied homes rises to over 50 percent in some cases. Four out of ten tenants have experienced a rent increase in the last five years.
Schools and day-care centres
Satisfaction with the structural situation of schools and childcare facilities has risen compared to the previous year. At 79 per cent, grammar schools are most frequently rated as satisfactory.
Mobility
Despite the criticised state of the transport infrastructure, most residents favour a car with an internal combustion engine for the majority of their journeys. Nevertheless, more than half of the population use other means of transport or walk to the city centre.
Safety and order
While the majority of residents feel safe in their neighbourhood during the day (89 percent), this figure drops to 67 percent at night. The perception of safety in the Sonnenberg neighbourhood is well below average.
Citizen participation and media
Two out of three Chemnitz residents would like to see citizen participation programmes publicised more. On average, residents obtain information about their city from three to four different media.
