60 years of the sports school: the anniversary is celebrated with a festive event and an invitation to an open day
The 60th anniversary of the sports school in Chemnitz (located at Reichenhainer Straße 206) will be celebrated with a festive event and an open day on Saturday, 7 September 2013. Guests of honour will be Brunhild Kurth, Saxon Minister of State for Education and Cultural Affairs, and Mayor Philipp Rochold, who will deliver the greeting from the City of Chemnitz.
The festive event for invited guests will take place in the auditorium of the sports high school and will begin at 4.30 pm. There will be an open day at the sports high school and sports grammar school from 2.00 pm - both facilities will be open to all interested visitors until around 5.30 pm.
The programme for Saturday evening includes a festive event with a reunion party in the marquee, also on the school grounds in the Sportforum; admission is from 6 pm.
Representatives from politics and sport, including former pupils and teachers of the sports school, have confirmed their attendance.

About the sports school centre with grammar school and secondary school: The new sports middle school (now sports high school) was officially opened at the start of the 2012/2013 school year after two years of construction and offers pupils in the sports school centre ideal conditions for sporting and academic achievements. A total of 15.43 million euros was invested in this major city project, of which around 6.25 million was subsidised (ERDF and state funds).
In 2001, Chemnitz City Council decided to establish a sports school centre on the site of the sports forum in order to improve the teaching and training conditions for both sports schools and to promote young talent and competitive sport. Firstly, the sports high school was completely refurbished between 2002 and 2004. The costs of this construction phase totalled 5.3 million euros, of which 3.7 million euros were grants. A further step was taken in 2008 when the decision to carry out the construction work was confirmed. The city council decided to build a new three-court sports hall, a new connector with kitchen and multi-purpose room as well as the new construction of the current secondary school on Reichenhainer Straße. The sports hall and connecting wing were inaugurated in May 2010 and construction work on the new school began in September 2010. After two years of construction, the sports secondary school was completed.
