5th International Marianne Brandt Competition 2013
Festive event for the award ceremony and opening of the exhibition with Minister of State von Schorlemer and Mayor of Culture Rochold on Saturday, 7 September from 4 pm at the Chemnitz Industrial Museum
Chemnitz is the host city for a special cultural event: the 5th International Marianne Brandt Competition "Poetry of the Functional" 2013, named after one of the city's most famous daughters, is being organised under the patronage of the Mayor of Chemnitz. The competition organiser Trägerverein Villa Arte e. Prof. Dr Sabine von Schorlemer, Saxon State Minister for Science and Art, and Philipp Rochold, Mayor of Chemnitz, will be attending the festive event on Saturday at the Chemnitz Industrial Museum.
The city of Chemnitz is providing significant support for the competition: last year, the Villa Arte association received a grant of €9,400 from the municipal art and culture funding programme for the competition and €20,000 this year for the realisation of the competition. According to the City of Chemnitz's cultural office, which is supporting the preparations for the competition, the funding and support for the competition is being provided in particular to honour the prominent namesake of the competition, the well-known Bauhaus artist and daughter of the city Marianne Brandt (1893-1983), combined with the promotion of young, international designers and artists. The organisation of the Marianne Brandt competition has thus developed into an outstanding event in Chemnitz's cultural calendar with its link between past, present and future.
In good old BAUHAUS tradition, the coming Saturday will not only be a ceremony and vernissage, but - according to the organisers - a total work of art that also invites guests to participate: expert talks, performances, a concert by Kat Frankie as well as a masked ball, regional delicacies for tasting and much more will make the evening under the roof of the Chemnitz Industrial Museum a special experience.
For the first time, visitors will also be able to vote for their favourites and award an audience prize. Members of the international jury are Andrea Branzi (architecture and design legend from Milan), Prof. Dr Michael Braungart (Cradle to Cradle inventor working in Hamburg and the USA), Marti Guixé (designer from Barcelona), Saskia Diez (jewellery designer from Munich) and Leipzig photographer Betram Kober.
Among the supporters and co-organisers of the 5th International Marianne Brandt Competition and the festive awards ceremony are top-class artists and art scholars, including Prof. Jørn Mortensen (Dean of the Oslo National Academy of Arts), Erik van Buuren (material scientist from Berlin), Rosa Merk (photographer from Berlin), Edgar Knobloch (artist and draughtsman from Leipzig), Torsten Blume (scenographer and art scientist from Leipzig, also works for the Bauhaus Foundation in Dessau) and Prof. Vincenz Warnke (designer and works at Burg Giebichenstein Halle).
The winners of the competition can expect prizes totalling 5,000 euros each as well as recognition in each category. The Saxon State Minister for Science and Art will also award a special prize worth 5,000 euros. Further prizes will be awarded by companies such as Alessi, s.p.a. Milano, vitra GmbH, USM Haller AG Münsingen, smow GmbH Leipzig and the Neue Schule für Fotografie Berlin.
