50 years of twinning with Timbuktu
Opening of the exhibition "The Treasures of Timbuktu" and panel discussion on 1 October, 6 p.m. - Guests from Mali sign the city's Golden Book
6 October 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the town twinning between Chemnitz and Timbuktu. This special anniversary will be duly celebrated with guests from Mali with an exhibition of 25 selected historically valuable original manuscripts from Timbuktu, which will open next Monday, 1 October at 6 pm in the Central Library of the City of Chemnitz in the TIETZ.
Mayor Michael Stötzer will welcome the guests from Mali to the TIETZ on behalf of Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. Aboubacrine Cissé, mayor of Timbuktu, Sadec Bocar Hamadoun, 3rd deputy mayor, Abou Inamoud, 4th deputy mayor, Mohamed Cissé, mayor of Timbuktu. Deputy Mayor, Mohamed Diagayeté, Director General of the Ahmed Baba Institute (IHERIAB) Timbuktu, and Seck Oumou Sall, Mali's Ambassador to Germany, signed the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz in this festive setting.
The subsequent panel discussion on the current situation in Timbuktu and the status and prospects of the town twinning will be attended by, among others, Mayor Aboubacrine Cissé, CDU Member of Parliament Frank Heinrich (Chemnitz) and the Ambassador, Seck Oumou Sall. After the discussion, the exhibited treasures of Timbuktu can be viewed.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to this event. The guests of the panel discussion and exhibition opening will be available for interviews and photos on Monday, 1 October 2018.
The exhibition is regularly open from Tuesday, 2 October to Saturday, 6 October and can be viewed on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 am to 8 pm and on Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. It will be accompanied by the scientist and director of the IHERIAB, Mohamed Diagayeté. Admission is free.
