In March 1990, the Haus Umweltzentrum, a former GDR state security building on the Vorderer Kaßberg, was handed over to local environmental and civil rights initiatives by a decision of the Chemnitz City Round Table. A successful turnaround at the time. To this day, it has established itself as a "centre of activity" for peace, environmental and development policy groups.
Associations and initiatives such as the Saxon Refugee Council, Amnesty International, the RAA victim counselling service, the Chemnitz-Timbuktu town twinning association, the Peace AG, the General Bicycle Club of Germany, a bicycle workshop, the German Transport Club, the GREEN League, the Chemnitz City Forum, the Saxony Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and teilAuto now have their offices and contact points as well as event rooms in the building. and event rooms in the building.
The municipal environmental centre, including the environmental library and Local Agenda 21, a participatory process for sustainable development, has also been represented here from the outset.
The committed people who work and gather here have always been active in the local and global implementation of human rights and environmental protection, have managed projects and offers in this regard, organised dialogues, promoted discourse and established and maintained local and supra-regional partnerships. These are essential aspects for achieving global sustainability goals that will continue to be indispensable in the future.
In early summer 2022, a public 30+2 street festival with stands and hands-on activities is planned, to which citizens, initiatives, associations, organisations, interested parties and those active in the field of sustainability are invited to look to the future together and exchange ideas on how to get there.
