From Sunday to Friday, 4 to 9 May, the Chemnitz School Theatre Week will take place for the 27th time. For the first time in its history, it is linked to a theme for the theatre groups. In the year of the European Capital of Culture, the week is entitled: Chemnitz School Theatre Week Meets Europe.
The 300 or so children and young people taking part will perform their plays on the three stages in the Spinnbau theatre. Admission costs 2.50 euros each. Tickets can be purchased via 0371 6969-661 and -662 as well as via tickets(at)theater-chemnitz.de.
The theatre groups that applied for the school theatre week last year dealt with the city of Chemnitz and the title "C the Unseen", found ideas from the cosmos of Europe, came into contact with their partner schools in other European countries or, independently of this, took their own imaginative paths.
For example, the pupils of the Chemnitz school model will tell in their play that even the gods of Olympus have heard about Chemnitz and want to give their support. The DAZ class from Mittweida will trace the mythology of the king's daughter Europa in their colourful mask and puppet theatre. And the children from the Pablo Neruda Primary School in Chemnitz and the Evangelical Primary School in Lippersdorf will take to the stage to embark on adventurous journeys through the countries of Europe.
In addition to the schools from Chemnitz and the region, a theatre group from the twin city of Düsseldorf will also be visiting Chemnitz, whose play deals with the major theme of freedom. Theatre groups from the Czech Republic will also travel to Chemnitz to present their plays.
One of the main aims of the Chemnitz Theatre Festival is to encourage encounters between the young actors. There will be intensive discussions on the themes of the plays, also together with the audience.
A special collaboration has developed between the theatre group from Düsseldorf and the one from Chemnitz Agricola-Gymnasium. On behalf of the city of Chemnitz, the young people are working together on a performance that will take place on 8 May at the bench for Justin Sonder on the Brühl as part of the commemorative event for Liberation Day. The sculpture of Justin Sonder, an honorary citizen of Chemnitz and Holocaust survivor, was unveiled last year on 9 November.
