25 April 2020 - Day of the tree

Watering trees so that they survive

Tomorrow is the Day of the Tree. This has been celebrated in Germany since 1952 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of forests for people and the economy.

The years 2018 and 2019 were not good ones for the trees in Chemnitz, as many trees did not survive the hot summers with severe drought. It was only with the help and support of many nature lovers that young trees in particular were able to survive these two years.

There are currently 71 official tree sponsors in the city who actively support the work of the Parks Department with practical help or financial donations. The current total donation amount is 8,260 euros. Of this, the company domeba is supporting reforestation in the forest with 5,000 euros.

The year 2020 - once again far too dry - seems to have further worsened the overall situation.

The city's planned tree planting campaigns will continue despite the poor climatic conditions. This spring, trees have already been planted on the following streets: Michaelstraße, Thomas-Mann-Platz, Otto-Planer-Straße, Südbahnhof roundabout, Salzstraße/Schloßplatz, Horst-Menzel-Straße and Barbarossastraße.

More trees are to follow in autumn 2020: Lutherkarree (Bernhardstraße/Fichtestraße/ Charlottenstraße), Vettersstraße, green space on Goethestraße, Horst-Menzel-Straße, Agricolastraße and Zeißstraße.

These new plantings will be equipped with water bags to ensure irrigation. In addition, reforestation will take place in the municipal forest and trees will be planted in parks, school playgrounds and daycare centres.

But once again, the active help of the people of Chemnitz is needed.
The request to all Chemnitz residents: walk through your neighbourhood with open eyes. There are thirsty trees everywhere and with little effort you can actively help to keep Chemnitz "green". Water the tree of your choice and give it a chance to survive.
