24th Days of Jewish Culture: Getting to know Jewish life
Opening on Saturday, 28 February 2015 at 19:30 at the Saxon Museum of Archaeology - more than 70 events, around 30 organisers
From 28 February to 15 March, Chemnitz celebrates the Days of Jewish Culture. With around 70 events, the 24th edition is one of the largest and most traditional of its kind in East Germany. The Days of Jewish Culture, under the patronage of Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig, will be opened on 28 February at 7:30 pm in the Saxon Museum of Archaeology.
At the opening, Dr Herbert Lappe from Dresden will give a humorous account of Jewish life in Saxony. Under the title "Three rabbis are at home in Saxony", Zsolt Balla from Leipzig, Alexander Nachama from Dresden and Jakov Pertsovsky from Chemnitz will reveal how they imagine Jewish life in the Free State. The exhibition Cross section by the Israeli jewellery artist Deganit Stern Schocken will be opened at the same time. Amir Gwirtzman, a musician from Tel Aviv, will then perform a concert.
Over the next two weeks, numerous events will invite visitors to get to know the many facets of Jewish life, from music and art to everyday life with rituals and customs. The programme includes concerts, guided tours, exhibitions, school visits, lectures, readings, theatre performances, film screenings and religious services. Almost 30 associations, organisations and institutions are involved in organising the programme.
