24 more Stolpersteine to be laid in Chemnitz
Action on 14 June at eleven locations - start: 9 am at Brauhausstraße 19
On Wednesday, 14 June, more Stolpersteine will be laid in Chemnitz. A total of 24 of the small brass plaques will be embedded in the pavement at eleven different locations in the city. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. with the Stolperstein for Nathanael Siegfried Lässig at Brauhausstraße 19.
This means that a total of more than 300 Stolpersteine in the city will commemorate the fates of people who were persecuted, deported, murdered or driven to their deaths during the National Socialist regime. Embedded in the pavement, the small brass plaques on the stones provide information about the most important dates of their lives and mark the last place where these people lived or worked. This year, Jewish, political and "euthanasia" victims are being honoured in this way.
Family members, including those from the USA and Denmark, committed citizens, associations and pupils from three Chemnitz schools are sponsoring the memorial stones, financing them and accompanying their laying in the city centre.
The worldwide project was launched in 1993 by Cologne artist Gunter Demnig. Since 2007, the city of Chemnitz has honoured former fellow citizens who were victims of National Socialism with Stumbling Stones. The project is coordinated by the Stumbling Stones Working Group under the direction of the City of Chemnitz. The members of the AG Stolpersteine include the Chemnitz City Association of the VVN/BdA, the historian Dr Jürgen Nitsche and the Chemnitz City Archive.
