21st Saxon Archives Day from 25 to 27 March in Chemnitz

Title: "From the glass plate to the hard disc - aspects of photo archiving" Press conference on 26 March, 12 noon, in the lecture hall building of Chemnitz University of Technology

The 21st Saxon Archives Day, one of the largest regional archives congresses in Germany, will take place in Chemnitz from 25 to 27 March 2015. Under the title "From the glass plate to the hard drive - aspects of photo archiving", almost 200 archivists from Saxony and guests from Germany and abroad, more participants than ever before, will address issues relating to the archiving of photos.

Alongside documents, files, maps and plans, photos are important sources in Saxony's archives. The city archives in Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig alone house over 1 million analogue images. Digital photography is generating an ever-increasing flood of photos that need to be checked for archival value and made accessible to users.

However, photos also offer archives many opportunities. Archives can use them to present themselves to the public comparatively easily and effectively and will do so even more in future in view of the "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities". The symposium will present cataloguing projects and show how photos can be used for exhibitions. A further focus will be on the utilisation and copyrights to be observed when using photos.

The Saxon Archives Day is jointly organised by the Saxon State Association of the Association of German Archivists, the Saxon State Archives, the Chemnitz University Archives and the City of Chemnitz.

Over 20 exhibitors from all over Germany will be presenting their products at an archive fair. Special boxes for archive material will be presented as well as technology for filming and digitisation. The archive fair is open to the public.
