21st Chemnitz Peace Day promotes more togetherness
Events, exhibitions and sporting activities on 5 March
This year, many stakeholders are joining forces to organise the 21st Chemnitz Peace Day to commemorate the horrors of the Second World War and to set an example for peaceful coexistence, democracy and cosmopolitanism.
Mayor Sven Schulze invites you to the traditional commemoration ceremony at the municipal cemetery on 5 March at 10 am to mark the Day of Peace. A wreath will be laid at the memorial to the victims of the bombing of the city of Chemnitz. Contemporary witnesses will talk about their childhood memories of the night of the bombing on 5 March 1945.
These memories are also the focus of the exhibition "At nightfall - childhood memories of contemporary witnesses on 5 March 1945". This can be seen by the public for the first time from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the exhibition room of Chemnitz Town Hall. 18 men and women will talk about their experiences in the audiovisual exhibition.
At 10 a.m., the Lauf-KulTour e.V. and the Stadtsportbund Chemnitz e.V. will start the "Dove of Peace" project on the Neumarkt. The runners want to draw a dove on the map of Chemnitz as a symbol of peace. The almost 20-kilometre route in the shape of a dove of peace will be tracked via GPS and will appear on a map in real time.
From 11 a.m., the AG Friedenstag will be present on Neumarkt to collect wishes for peace. Various exhibitions can be seen on construction fences. The photo exhibition "Scenes of Survival" by photojournalist Wassilis Aswestopoulos documents the situation in Greek refugee camps. Messages of peace from twin cities have reached the city of Chemnitz. And with the support of Aktion C, young people from Chemnitz will be exploring the works of writer Stefan Heym under the theme "Find your way!".
The ice skating rink of the Chemnitz Settlement Community on Neumarkt will be open from 12 noon .
Concerts and theatre performances by the Chemnitz Municipal Music School and Chemnitz Municipal Theatre can be attended in St. Jakobi Church at 3, 4 and 5 pm.
On the evening of 5 March at 6 pm, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will take part in the main Peace Day event and welcome the participants. The Peace Day Working Group and the Chemnitz Settlement Community will also give speeches. The event will be accompanied by the brass ensemble of the municipal theatre and the Chemnitz Ice Skating Club.
At the same time, Sachsen-Fernsehen Chemnitz will be showing a special programme on the 21st Chemnitz Peace Day for all those at home from 6 pm . The film "The Eternal March", which was shown for the first time last year, will also be shown.
At 8 p.m., the Chemnitz parishes invite you to an ecumenical service under the motto "Power and abuse of power" in St Jakobi Church.
The ice rink of the "Chemnitz Ice Magic" will be open once again on this day from 7 to 8.30 pm.
At the end of the day at around 8.45 pm , visitors can place candles on the peace cross or a dove of peace. The bells of the Chemnitz churches will ring at 9 pm.
The regulations of the Corona Protection Ordinance in force at that time must be observed at all events.
