At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council set the date for the next mayoral election. The election will take place on Sunday 5 September 2027.
Should no candidate achieve the required majority in the first round of voting, a second round will be held on Sunday, 26 September 2027.
The term of office for the Lord Mayor is normally seven years.
The current mayor’s term of office will therefore end on 25 November 2027.
Under the Saxon Local Government Act, the election must take place no earlier than three months and no later than one month before the post becomes vacant. With 5 September 2027 as the election date, it falls within this timeframe.
In setting the date, the City Council has also taken the Saxon school holidays into account. The summer holidays end on 20 August 2027, and the autumn holidays begin on 11 October 2027. The election date therefore falls outside both holiday periods.
The second round of voting is scheduled for the third Sunday following the first round. This allows sufficient time for the necessary preparations. This also applies to postal voting: eligible voters may cast their vote by post for both the first round and any second round that may be required.
The legal basis for the election is the Saxon Municipal Code, the Local Elections Act and the Saxon Local Elections Regulations, as currently in force.
