2011 census: Chemnitz has 240,253 inhabitants
Chemnitz had 240,253 inhabitants on 9 May 2011, the census date. This new official population figure was determined by the Federal Statistical Office for the independent city of Chemnitz following the official 2011 census, the results of which were published today. This figure differs from the official population figure previously updated by the State Statistical Office on the basis of 3 October 1990 by 2693 inhabitants.
With the redefinition of the population figures, the Saxon cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants have between one and four per cent fewer inhabitants. In Chemnitz, the number of inhabitants is 1.1 per cent lower. If one compares the population figures on the selected census date in 2011 with the status of the Chemnitz population register at that time, the difference is only 200 inhabitants. This corresponds to a correction of 0.08%.
"The fact that the officially established figures are so close to our previous figures speaks for the quality of our population register and the resulting reliable data that our statisticians work with," says Mayor Barbara Ludwig. "Chemnitz is and remains the third largest city in eastern Germany. Despite this pleasing result compared to other cities, our task is to attract people to our city."
Net migration in particular has developed well in recent years: since 2009, more people have been coming to Chemnitz than leaving. In 2012, the balance was + 1901 people. The largest proportion of this group - 1530 people in total - is made up of 16 to 29-year-olds who come to Chemnitz to study or for vocational training.

The population is divided into 48.2 % men and 51.8 % women. 12.4 per cent of the population are under 18 years old, 14.6 per cent between 18 and 30. 24.8 per cent of Chemnitz residents are between 30 and 50 years old, 21.3 per cent up to 65 years old. Over 65 years old are 26.9 per cent. 38.9 per cent of Chemnitz residents are single, 43.5 per cent are married. The proportion of Chemnitz residents with a migration background is 6.2 per cent, the proportion of foreigners is 2.9 per cent. 28.4 per cent of Chemnitz residents have a technical college or university entrance qualification, 40.9 per cent have an intermediate school leaving certificate and 26.8 per cent have a lower secondary school leaving certificate. 66.4 per cent of Chemnitz residents have completed vocational training and 19.4 per cent have a university degree. The employment rate in Chemnitz is 51.6 per cent, of which 10.3 per cent are self-employed.
2011 census
The census was the first time since 1987 that population figures and basic demographic and socio-economic characteristics were determined throughout Germany. To do this, the Federal Statistical Office analysed the city's population register and interviewed around 10,000 randomly selected people in the city.
