200 years Singakademie Chemnitz

On Wednesday 18 October at 6 pm, Chemnitz music historian Prof. Dr Werner Kaden will be speaking at the city archive on the topic of "On the Social Exercise of the Art of Music ..." - 200 years of the Chemnitz Singing Academy. Admission is free.
The Singakademie is the oldest choral society in the city. Founded in 1817, the choir reached its first heyday after 1860 under the direction of church music director Theodor Schneider and presented the great oratorios and masses of the musical literature.
The Singakademie was re-established in 1966. Choir director Franzpeter Müller-Sybel led it to a leading position among the choirs in the former GDR. The Singakademie's "trademarks" were Orff's "Carmina Burana" and "Canto General" by Mikis Theodorakis.
The fall of the Berlin Wall created new conditions for the choir, which had previously been supported by the Fritz-Heckert-Kombinat. Now it also had to assert itself artistically under market economy conditions.
