200 children paint the theatre square
Chalk painting campaign "1 m² art on the theatre square" on 16 May
On 16 May, 200 children will transform Chemnitz's Theaterplatz into a colourful space in a large-scale chalk painting campaign starting at 9 am. All participating children will each create one square metre of art. The individual squares will then grow together to form a huge total work of art covering 200 square metres.
All interested parties are cordially invited to view the small and large works of art. Representatives of the media are also cordially invited.
Background:
In the day-care centres of the City of Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Art Collections, children are offered a variety of opportunities to engage with art at an early age and in a variety of ways. Educators from the daycare centres and a museum educator have jointly developed the project, which enables 200 Chemnitz children to encounter art and ends with a shared highlight, the large-scale chalk painting event.
Chemnitz-born Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and his expressionist works play a major role in the pilot project "1m² Art on Theatre Square". The children have been visiting the Chemnitz Art Collections with their teachers for several days now and are exploring the works and the life and work of the Chemnitz artist under the guidance of a museum educator.
The guided tours are offered all year round in the art collections, but this is the first time that the children have painted the theatre square themselves afterwards.
