20 years of the Vivarium at Chemnitz Zoo
Lecture by the Tierparkfreunde Chemnitz on 9 November, 5 pm
To mark the 20th anniversary of the vivarium at Chemnitz Zoo, the zoo's friends' association, Tierparkfreunde Chemnitz, invites you to a lecture on this unique refuge for amphibians. The event will take place on 9 November at 5 pm in the event room (conservatory) of the Pelzmühle restaurant. Admission is free. Speakers are the vet, the head of animal care and the director of the Chemnitz zoo.
In 1993, Chemnitz Zoo took over the amphibian collection of the Natural History Museum Schloss Bertholdsburg in Schleußingen on the initiative of the then director Dr Müller. In 1994, work began on converting the former stables into a specialised house for amphibians. The vivarium was opened in the summer of 1996, when it contained three differently tempered showrooms for amphibian species from all over the world. A few years ago, a fourth room for Chinese giant salamanders was added.
There are currently 63 species living in the vivarium. The variety of amphibian life forms kept and bred here gives visitors an insight into the world of frogs, amphibians and slithering creatures and provides information about the way of life and threats to this interesting group of animals. The house is unique in Europe and is the zoo's unique selling point.
